Technical Dossier
The Red Lion G3 Series is a line of compact operator interface terminals (OITs) and human-machine interface (HMI) panels engineered for deployment in demanding industrial environments. Installed across chemical processing plants, oil refineries, water treatment facilities, and discrete manufacturing lines globally, the G3 Series occupies a well-established position in the mid-range HMI market. Its combination of serial and Ethernet communication support, onboard data logging, and compatibility with over 300 industrial protocols via Red Lion's Data Station technology made it a standard specification item for system integrators throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Units in this series continue to operate in legacy installations where replacement with a modern platform is not operationally or economically viable.
The G3 Series was introduced by Red Lion Controls as a successor to the G2 and earlier Gemini panel lines. Early G3 units were characterized by monochrome STN LCD displays, RS-232/RS-485 serial interfaces, and keypad-only input. As the platform matured, Red Lion introduced color TFT display variants, touchscreen input options, expanded onboard memory, and Ethernet 10/100 connectivity. The internal architecture is based on a fixed-function embedded processor running a proprietary runtime environment; there is no open OS layer. Communication is handled through Red Lion's Crimson configuration software, which manages protocol drivers, tag databases, and display page logic. Compatibility between Crimson 2.x and Crimson 3.x project files is not bidirectional, which is a known migration constraint for facilities upgrading from early G3 hardware to current Red Lion Graphite or FlexEdge platforms. The G3 Series is now in the mature/end-of-life phase of its product lifecycle. Red Lion has transitioned its HMI roadmap to the Graphite (G10, G15) and Crimson 3.2-based platforms. Long-term maintenance support for G3 units therefore depends on the availability of new-old-stock (NOS) and refurbished spare units from specialist distributors.
The following SKUs represent the documented G3 Series product range. Units are classified by display type, input method, and communication configuration.
Operator Interface Terminals — Monochrome / Keypad Input
Operator Interface Terminals — Color TFT / Touchscreen
With the G3 Series now in end-of-life status, authorized distribution channels no longer carry new stock for the majority of SKUs. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of G3 Series units sourced through controlled secondary market channels, including decommissioned plant equipment, OEM overstock, and verified refurbishment programs. All units are inspected prior to listing. For facilities operating G3 panels in continuous-process environments — where an unplanned HMI failure results in production downtime — DriveKNMS provides advance replacement units and emergency sourcing services. Customers requiring long-term lifecycle support contracts for G3 installations are encouraged to contact our technical sales team to discuss stocking agreements and multi-unit reserve programs.
G3 Series units undergo a structured inspection and functional verification process prior to dispatch. Each unit is powered on and tested against its factory display resolution and backlight output specification. Serial and Ethernet communication ports are verified using loopback and live protocol handshake tests. Touchscreen linearity and keypad actuation force are checked against Red Lion's published mechanical tolerances. Units with cracked display glass, failed backlights, or corrupted onboard firmware are quarantined and not offered for sale. Where applicable, Crimson configuration software is used to confirm that the unit's internal tag database and communication driver stack are intact and responsive. Refurbished units are clearly identified as such, with condition grade disclosed at point of sale.
