Technical Dossier
The ABB Freelance AC700F series is a compact distributed control system (DCS) platform deployed extensively across global heavy industry, including petrochemical refineries, chemical processing plants, offshore platforms, and nuclear auxiliary systems. Built on ABB's Freelance DCS architecture, the AC700F controller family provides deterministic real-time control with integrated PROFIBUS DP and Modbus communication, making it a standard reference platform in facilities requiring long-lifecycle process automation. The PT8153B-E programmable compact controller module is a core CPU unit within this series, combining onboard I/O capability with a standalone controller footprint suited for distributed node deployment. Installations of the AC700F series span multiple continents, with particularly high density in European and Asian refinery and power generation infrastructure.
The ABB Freelance DCS platform originated in the late 1990s as a successor to the Advant OCS and Master series, designed to bridge the gap between full-scale DCS and PLC-based control. The AC700F was introduced as a compact, cost-optimized controller node within the Freelance 800F ecosystem, sharing the same DigiVis / Control Builder F engineering environment as the larger AC800F controller.
Early AC700F hardware (circa 2000–2008) used proprietary backplane communication and required dedicated power supply modules. Mid-generation revisions introduced enhanced PROFIBUS DP master/slave capability and expanded onboard analog I/O density. The PT8153B-E represents a mature revision of the compact controller design, incorporating improved EMC shielding and extended operating temperature tolerance for harsh industrial environments.
Compatibility considerations: AC700F modules are not directly interchangeable with AC800F modules despite sharing the Freelance software environment. Firmware versions must be matched to the Control Builder F project version. Modules produced before 2010 may require firmware downgrade procedures when replacing units in legacy installations. ABB formally announced end-of-active-development for the AC700F hardware line; the platform is now in the sustained support / lifecycle extension phase, with no new hardware variants planned.

Communication & Power Modules
The AC700F series has entered the lifecycle extension phase. ABB no longer manufactures new hardware for the majority of AC700F module variants, and lead times through authorized distribution channels are measured in months or are indefinite for specific SKUs including the PT8153B-E, AI830, CI810B, and SD803.
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of tested AC700F spare parts sourced from decommissioned plant equipment, authorized surplus channels, and controlled factory stock. Our inventory focus for the AC700F series includes:
All sourced modules are supplied with available revision history and, where applicable, original ABB calibration certificates. Emergency same-day quotation is available for critical plant shutdown scenarios.
AC700F modules present specific test challenges due to their integrated backplane communication bus and onboard firmware dependency. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all AC700F inventory:
