Technical Dossier
The Yaskawa SGMG series represents one of the most widely deployed medium-to-large frame AC servo motor families in global heavy industry. Rated from 300W to 15kW, SGMG motors are engineered for continuous-duty, high-inertia load applications including chemical plant conveyors, nuclear facility positioning systems, refinery valve actuators, and steel mill rolling line drives. Their flange-mount construction (IEC/NEMA compatible), IP65 ingress protection rating, and compatibility with Yaskawa SGDB, CACR, and SGDH series servo drives have made them a standard specification in plant-wide DCS and motion control architectures built between the late 1990s and 2010s. Installed base across Asia-Pacific, the Middle East, and Europe remains substantial, sustaining active demand for both new-old-stock and refurbished units.
The SGMG series was introduced as part of Yaskawa's Sigma-I motion platform, succeeding the earlier SGMD brushless servo line. Key architectural milestones: the original SGMG frames used resolver feedback as standard, with incremental encoder variants designated by suffix codes (e.g., -OAS = resolver, -ASA = 13-bit incremental encoder). Mid-generation revisions introduced 17-bit absolute encoders (suffix -ABS), improving positional repeatability to ±1 arc-minute. The series interfaces natively with SGDB-series analog-reference drives and CACR-series pulse-train drives, and retains backward compatibility with SGDH drives via parameter adjustment. As Yaskawa transitioned to the Sigma-II (SGMAH/SGMPH) and Sigma-V (SGMJV/SGMAV) platforms through the 2000s-2010s, the SGMG line entered a maintenance-only lifecycle. Cross-reference to modern equivalents: SGMG-30ASA maps to SGMAV-3AANA (Sigma-V, 3kW, equivalent frame). Compatibility note: SGMG motors are not plug-and-play with Sigma-V drives without encoder adapter cables and parameter reconfiguration.

The SGMG series reached end-of-production status at Yaskawa's Kitakyushu facility. Official Yaskawa repair and spare parts support has been progressively withdrawn, with most frame sizes now classified as no longer manufactured (NLM) in Yaskawa's global service database. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for SGMG lifecycle extension, covering: new-old-stock (NOS) units sourced from decommissioned plant equipment; factory-refurbished motors with encoder replacement and winding resistance verification; and cross-reference mapping to Sigma-V and Sigma-7 equivalent models for customers planning platform migration. All SGMG units in DriveKNMS stock are catalogued by frame size, feedback type, shaft configuration, and brake option to enable precise replacement matching without requiring a Yaskawa service contract.
SGMG motors present specific inspection challenges due to their resolver and early-generation encoder assemblies, aging winding insulation, and mechanical wear on the output shaft bearing and oil seal. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all SGMG units prior to dispatch: (1) Winding insulation resistance test at 500VDC — minimum 100MΩ pass threshold; (2) Phase resistance balance check across U/V/W terminals — tolerance ±5%; (3) Encoder or resolver signal integrity verification using a Yaskawa-compatible servo drive in test mode; (4) No-load run test at rated speed for 30 minutes with vibration and temperature monitoring; (5) Shaft runout measurement — maximum 0.02mm TIR; (6) IP65 seal inspection on cable entry and shaft exit points. Units failing any criterion are quarantined and not offered for sale.
