Kollmorgen AKD Series: Comprehensive Module Range and Technical Overview

The Kollmorgen AKD series is a family of digital servo drives engineered for precision motion control in heavy industrial environments. Deployed across chemical processing plants, nuclear facilities, oil refineries, semiconductor fabrication lines, and large-scale packaging operations, the AKD platform has established a dominant installed base in applications requiring deterministic torque, velocity, and position control. The series supports single-axis and multi-axis configurations and is compatible with a broad range of Kollmorgen AKM and AKD2G servo motors. Its EtherCAT, CANopen, and analog/step-direction interface options make it a standard reference design in both legacy DCS architectures and modern IIoT-integrated motion systems.

The Evolution of AKD Architecture

The AKD platform was introduced by Kollmorgen in the late 2000s as a successor to the S200 and S300 series, consolidating analog and digital drive functionality into a single unified hardware platform. Early AKD variants (circa 2009–2012) shipped with firmware supporting basic CANopen DS402 and analog ±10V command interfaces. Subsequent firmware generations added full EtherCAT CoE (CAN over EtherCAT) support, enabling integration with Beckhoff TwinCAT, Omron Sysmac, and other EtherCAT masters without hardware changes.

The AKD-P (Panel-mount) and AKD-T (DIN-rail) mechanical variants were introduced to address different cabinet form factors. The PDMM (Programmable Drive Multi-axis Master) variant embedded an IEC 61131-3 runtime directly in the drive, enabling standalone motion programs without an external PLC. The AKD2G series, released in the 2018–2020 timeframe, represents the current-generation successor, offering dual-axis capability, functional safety (STO, SS1, SLS per IEC 62061), and enhanced thermal management. Legacy AKD units remain in active service across installed bases and continue to require spare parts and repair support through authorized distributors and independent MRO suppliers.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete AKD Series Parts

As the AKD series transitions toward end-of-life in certain current ratings and interface configurations, procurement teams face increasing lead times from OEM channels. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of both active and discontinued AKD variants, sourced through authorized distribution networks and certified secondary market channels. For facilities operating legacy AKD installations where a full drive replacement would require re-engineering the motion control architecture, DriveKNMS provides like-for-like unit replacement, firmware-matched spares, and cross-reference support to identify compatible substitute models within the AKD2G generation. All units are serialized, traceable, and supplied with documentation packages suitable for regulated industries including nuclear and pharmaceutical manufacturing.

Quality Control for the AKD Series Range

Each AKD unit processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured inspection and functional verification protocol prior to dispatch. The procedure includes visual inspection of the power stage, gate driver board, and feedback interface connectors; insulation resistance testing on the DC bus and motor output terminals; functional power-up verification using a controlled resistive load; and communication interface validation via EtherCAT or CANopen loopback test as applicable to the unit's firmware configuration. For units with STO (Safe Torque Off) circuitry, the safety relay path is independently verified against the IEC 62061 diagnostic coverage specification. Units that do not pass all test stages are quarantined and not released for sale. Test records are retained and available upon request for regulated procurement processes.
