Technical Dossier
The ABB JCU (Joint Control Unit) series is the dedicated control platform for ABB's industrial AC drive families, including the ACS880, ACS580, ACS380, and ACS850 series. Deployed across heavy-process industries — petroleum refining, chemical processing, pulp and paper, water treatment, and nuclear auxiliary systems — the JCU architecture provides the real-time motor control, fieldbus communication, and I/O expansion backbone for variable-speed drive installations worldwide. Its modular design allows engineers to configure drive control capability independently of the power stage, enabling standardized maintenance strategies across multi-drive installations.
The JCU control unit lineage originates from ABB's transition away from proprietary RDCU and RMIO control boards used in the ACS800 generation. The JCU-11 was introduced as the baseline control unit for the ACS880 single-drive series, providing a standardized DDCS (Distributed Drives Communication System) and FCAN/FDNA fieldbus interface platform. The JCU-12 extended this with enhanced memory and processing capacity for demanding application programs. The JCU-22 was developed for the ACS880 multidrives cabinet platform, sharing the same firmware base but adapted for common DC bus topologies.
Across generations, ABB maintained backward firmware compatibility within the JCU family, allowing drives to be upgraded from JCU-11 to JCU-12 without hardware redesign. The JCU series interfaces with ABB's Drive Composer and DriveWindow tools via the USB service port and supports the FENA-21 Ethernet adapter, FPBA-01 PROFIBUS adapter, FDNA-01 DeviceNet adapter, and FCAN-01 CANopen adapter for fieldbus integration. As the ACS880 platform has entered its mature lifecycle phase, JCU control units are now primarily sourced as long-term maintenance spares for installed base support.

Memory & Firmware Accessories
As the ACS880 platform matures, procurement of JCU control units through standard distribution channels becomes increasingly constrained. ABB's standard product availability windows do not guarantee stock for installed-base maintenance requirements beyond the active production phase. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of JCU-11, JCU-12, and JCU-22 units sourced from verified industrial surplus, decommissioned equipment, and authorized secondary market channels.
All units are inspected against ABB's published hardware revision documentation. DriveKNMS provides firmware version verification, DDCS communication testing, and I/O channel functional checks prior to shipment. For end-users operating ACS880 installations in critical process environments — where drive replacement lead times are unacceptable — DriveKNMS offers consignment stock agreements and priority allocation programs for JCU series control units.
JCU control units incorporate a multi-layer PCB design with DDCS fiber-optic interface circuitry, real-time DSP processing, and FLASH memory for application program storage. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all JCU units prior to dispatch:
