The Allen-Bradley PowerFlex 4 series (catalog prefix 22A) is a compact, general-purpose AC variable frequency drive manufactured by Rockwell Automation. It is deployed across a broad spectrum of heavy industrial applications including chemical processing plants, petroleum refineries, water treatment facilities, pulp and paper mills, and mining operations. The PowerFlex 4 occupies the entry-level tier of the PowerFlex drive family, designed for single-phase and three-phase motor control in the 0.2 kW to 11 kW (0.25 HP to 15 HP) power range. Its DIN rail-mountable form factor and standardized parameter structure made it a default specification in OEM machine panels and distributed control system (DCS) auxiliary drive cabinets throughout the 2000s and 2010s. Global installed base is estimated in the millions of units, ensuring continued demand for spare parts and replacement drives well into the 2030s.

The Evolution of PowerFlex 4 Architecture

The PowerFlex 4 was introduced by Rockwell Automation in the early 2000s as a successor to the 1305 and 1336 PLUS drive families. Its architecture is built around a fixed V/Hz (Volts-per-Hertz) control algorithm with an optional Sensorless Vector Control (SVC) mode, selectable via parameter P035. The drive communicates natively via the integral RS-485 DSI (Drive Serial Interface) port, which supports Modbus RTU and the proprietary DSI protocol for integration with Allen-Bradley PLCs and HMIs.

For applications requiring EtherNet/IP connectivity, the PowerFlex 40P and PowerFlex 400 represent the next architectural tier. Compatibility between PowerFlex 4 and PowerFlex 40 is high at the parameter level, simplifying migration in retrofit projects. The PowerFlex 4 series reached end-of-life (EOL) announcement from Rockwell Automation, making long-term spare parts sourcing a critical operational requirement for facilities that have not yet migrated.
