The Evolution of MicroLogix 1400 Architecture

The MicroLogix 1400 was introduced by Rockwell Automation circa 2008 as a successor to the MicroLogix 1200, addressing demand for embedded Ethernet/IP connectivity and expanded analog I/O without migrating to the CompactLogix platform. The core CPU architecture is based on a 32-bit processor running RSLogix 500 / Studio 5000 Logix Designer (via CCW — Connected Components Workbench) firmware. Key architectural milestones include:

Generation 1 (FRN 1.x – 5.x): Initial release with embedded 10/100 Ethernet, RS-232 (Channel 0), RS-232/485 (Channel 1), and 6 analog I/O channels. Data logging via microSD card introduced. Modbus RTU master/slave support added in early firmware revisions.

Generation 2 (FRN 6.x – 21.x): Expanded PID instruction set, enhanced data logging triggers, and improved EtherNet/IP explicit messaging. Firmware 21 represents the final major feature release. Compatibility with 1762-series MicroLogix 1200 expansion I/O modules is maintained throughout all revisions, allowing up to 7 expansion modules for a maximum of 256 I/O points.

End-of-Life Transition: Rockwell Automation announced the MicroLogix 1400 series as end-of-life (EOL) with last-time-buy windows closing progressively from 2022 onward. The recommended migration path is to the Micro820 (2080-series) or Micro850 (2080-series) controllers for new designs, or CompactLogix 5380 for applications requiring higher throughput. However, the installed base remains substantial, and spare parts demand for 1766-series controllers and 1762-series expansion modules continues across maintenance and MRO procurement channels.
