Allen-Bradley Stratix 5700 Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of Stratix 5700 Architecture

The Stratix 5700 was introduced as a successor to the Stratix 6000 and Stratix 8000 platforms, consolidating managed switching capability into a unified, DIN-rail and panel-mount form factor optimized for control cabinet integration. Early firmware revisions (pre-15.x) supported basic IGMP snooping, VLAN segmentation, and QoS prioritization for EtherNet/IP traffic. Subsequent firmware generations introduced NAT routing, integrated firewall rules, and enhanced DHCP server functionality, progressively reducing the need for separate network appliances in OT environments.

The architecture is built on a Cisco IOS-based software stack, co-developed with Cisco under the Rockwell-Cisco Converged Plantwide Ethernet (CPwE) alliance. This gives Stratix 5700 units full CLI compatibility with Cisco IOS commands while adding Rockwell-specific Add-On Profiles (AOPs) for seamless integration into Studio 5000 Logix Designer. Hardware revisions introduced SFP fiber uplink options, PoE+ variants, and conformal coating for harsh-environment deployment. As of 2024, the Stratix 5700 series has entered a mature/end-of-life transition phase for select SKUs, with Rockwell directing new designs toward the Stratix 5200 platform. However, the installed base remains extensive, and long-term maintenance support — including spare module sourcing — remains commercially critical through at least 2035 for most plant operators.
