Its dual-axis and single-axis inverter topology, combined with a shared DC bus infrastructure, allows engineers to achieve regenerative energy sharing across drive nodes — a critical requirement in high-cycle, high-inertia applications. The 2198-S160-ERS3 is a single-axis inverter module rated at 160A continuous output current, designed for integration into the 2198 DC-bus power rail system with EtherNet/IP (ERS3) communication.
Rockwell Automation's servo drive lineage progressed through several distinct generations before arriving at the Kinetix 5700 platform. The Ultra 3000 (2098-DSD series) represented the early standalone digital servo era, followed by the Kinetix 6000 (2094 series) which introduced the shared DC bus concept on a SERCOS III backbone. The Kinetix 6500 extended this with EtherNet/IP connectivity but retained a separate power supply topology. The Kinetix 5500 (2198-Hxxx) introduced a more compact, single-cable (2090-CSxM1DF) motor interface and native Studio 5000 integration. The Kinetix 5700 (2198-Sxxx / 2198-Dxxx) superseded the 5500 for high-power applications, introducing a true regenerative bus supply (2198-RPxxx), higher current ratings up to 260A per axis, and dual-port EtherNet/IP with Device Level Ring (DLR) support. Compatibility between generations is not direct — 2094-series power rails are electrically and mechanically incompatible with 2198-series bus bars. Migration from Kinetix 6000 to Kinetix 5700 requires new power infrastructure, new motor cables, and Studio 5000 v30 or later. The ERS3 communication standard (used in the 2198-S160-ERS3) denotes the third-generation EtherNet/IP drive profile, supporting CIP Motion and integrated safety over the same network port.
