Technical Dossier
The ABB Advant Controller (AC) series — encompassing the AC 31, AC 70, AC 80, AC 110, AC 160, and AC 410/450/460 product lines — represents one of the most widely deployed distributed control system (DCS) platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, offshore oil platforms, pulp and paper mills, and large-scale water treatment facilities, the Advant Controller architecture was engineered for deterministic real-time control with high-availability redundancy. Its modular backplane design, standardized S100 and S800 I/O bus interfaces, and long-term firmware stability made it the reference platform for process automation from the late 1980s through the 2010s. Many facilities continue to operate Advant Controller hardware as the primary control layer, making lifecycle parts sourcing a critical operational requirement.
The Advant Controller platform was introduced by ABB (then ASEA Brown Boveri) in the late 1980s as a successor to the MASTER series controllers. The architecture evolved through three distinct generations. The first generation (AC 31 / AC 70) targeted compact machine-level control with proprietary CS31 bus communication, offering basic analog and digital I/O in a DIN-rail form factor. The second generation (AC 110 / AC 160) introduced the Advant Fieldbus 100 (AF 100) protocol and expanded the I/O module range to include HART-capable analog inputs, redundant CPU configurations, and high-speed counter modules. The third generation (AC 410 / AC 450 / AC 460) integrated Ethernet-based MMS (Manufacturing Message Specification) communication, enabling direct SCADA connectivity and OPC server interfaces. Compatibility between generations is limited: S100 I/O modules are not electrically interchangeable with S800 I/O modules without adapter hardware. Firmware versions are tightly coupled to CPU hardware revisions, and cross-generation substitution requires engineering validation. As of 2026, the entire Advant Controller product line has reached end-of-life (EOL) status under ABB's product lifecycle policy, with no new hardware manufactured. Extended lifecycle support is available exclusively through authorized third-party spare parts suppliers.
