Technical Dossier
The ABB IRB6640 and IRB4600 are six-axis articulated industrial robots engineered for high-payload, high-precision applications across global heavy industry. The IRB6640 carries payloads up to 235 kg with a reach of 2.55 m, making it a standard platform in automotive body-in-white assembly, foundry operations, and heavy material handling at chemical plants, refineries, and nuclear facility maintenance environments. The IRB4600 addresses mid-range payload requirements (20–60 kg) with a compact footprint suited for arc welding, machine tending, and palletizing in process industries. Both platforms operate on ABB's S4C+ and IRC5 controller architectures and have accumulated multi-decade installed bases across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific industrial facilities. Lifecycle support for these platforms remains a critical procurement requirement as original production has transitioned to successor models.
ABB introduced the IRB6600 family in the late 1990s as a successor to the IRB6000 platform, with the IRB6640 emerging as a refined variant optimized for higher repeatability (±0.07 mm) and extended wrist torque ratings. The IRB4600 was introduced in the 2010s as a replacement for the IRB4400, incorporating the IRC5 single-cabinet controller and Integrated Force Control compatibility. Key architectural transitions include the shift from S4C+ to IRC5 controller (affecting drive unit pinouts and fieldbus module compatibility), the introduction of the FlexPendant (replacing the TPU teach pendant), and the migration from DeviceNet to PROFINET/EtherNet/IP as the primary fieldbus standard. Mechanical drive units, balancing devices, and axis computer boards from the S4C+ era are not directly interchangeable with IRC5-generation equivalents without firmware and hardware adaptation. Sourcing correct-generation spare parts is therefore a prerequisite for successful maintenance.

IRC5 Controller Modules (Compatible with Both Platforms)
ABB has transitioned active production support for the IRB6640 and IRB4600 platforms toward the IRB6700 and IRB4600 (2nd generation) successor lines. As a result, original-equipment spare parts for first-generation IRB6640 and early IRB4600 builds are increasingly sourced through specialist distributors rather than direct OEM channels. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of tested, pull-from-service, and new-old-stock (NOS) components for both platforms, including gearbox assemblies, servo motors, SMB boards, and IRC5 drive units. For facilities operating these robots under long-term maintenance agreements or in environments where robot replacement is not operationally feasible (nuclear, chemical, offshore), DriveKNMS provides lifecycle extension sourcing with documented part provenance and traceability records. Emergency same-day quotation is available for critical production-down situations.
All IRB6640 and IRB4600 mechanical and electronic components processed by DriveKNMS undergo a structured inspection protocol prior to dispatch. Gearbox units (3HAC023171-001, 3HAC023173-001, 3HAC029864-001 series) are inspected for backlash within ABB-specified tolerances, oil seal integrity, and bearing play. Servo motors are tested for resolver signal output, winding resistance, and insulation resistance at 500 VDC. SMB boards and axis computer cards are bench-tested under simulated IRC5 bus communication to verify encoder signal processing and EEPROM data integrity. All units are assigned a test record number and shipped with inspection documentation. Remanufactured gearboxes are filled with ABB-specified lubricant (Shell Tivela S 320 or equivalent) and sealed prior to packaging.
