The Freelance DCS architecture, of which the SCAU series forms a critical subsystem, is engineered for continuous process control with high availability requirements — typically 99.9%+ uptime in SIL-rated environments. Installed base spans facilities in Europe, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, and China, where ABB Freelance competes directly with Honeywell Experion, Emerson DeltaV, and Yokogawa CENTUM VP. The SCAU module family handles analog input/output signal conditioning, digital I/O interfacing, and fieldbus communication bridging, making it a non-replaceable component in legacy Freelance installations that cannot be migrated without full system overhaul.
