The SMC-Flex platform supports motor ratings from 3 A to 1250 A (200–600 VAC, 3-phase), covering fractional horsepower auxiliary motors through large compressor and pump drives. The 150 Series lineage traces to Rockwell Automation's acquisition of the Allen-Bradley SMC product line in the early 1990s. The original SMC-2 and SMC-Plus controllers (catalog prefix 150-A and 150-B) used analog thyristor firing circuits with limited parameter adjustability and no fieldbus connectivity. These units were panel-mounted with discrete I/O only and required external overload relays.
The SMC-Flex generation (catalog prefix 150-C, 150-F, 150-S) introduced a microprocessor-based control board, onboard electronic overload protection, and optional communication adapter slots compatible with DeviceNet, Profibus DP, and EtherNet/IP.
