Allen-Bradley 150 Series Technical Notes

The SMC-Flex platform supports motor ratings from 3 A to 1250 A (200–600 VAC, 3-phase), covering fractional horsepower auxiliary motors through large compressor and pump drives. Its core value proposition is controlled acceleration and deceleration without the harmonic distortion profile associated with PWM-based VFDs, making it the preferred solution in facilities with sensitive instrumentation buses.

The Evolution of 150 Series Architecture

The 150 Series lineage traces to Rockwell Automation's acquisition of the Allen-Bradley SMC product line in the early 1990s. The original SMC-2 and SMC-Plus controllers (catalog prefix 150-A and 150-B) used analog thyristor firing circuits with limited parameter adjustability and no fieldbus connectivity. These units were panel-mounted with discrete I/O only and required external overload relays.

The SMC-Flex generation (catalog prefix 150-C, 150-F, 150-S) introduced a microprocessor-based control board, onboard electronic overload protection, and optional communication adapter slots compatible with DeviceNet, Profibus DP, and EtherNet/IP. This architectural shift enabled integration with Rockwell's ControlLogix and CompactLogix PLC platforms via explicit messaging, eliminating the need for hardwired interlock panels in many applications.
