Bently Nevada 3300 Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of 3300 Series Architecture

The 3300 Series was developed during the late 1980s and entered widespread deployment through the 1990s as a direct response to industry demand for a modular, rack-based alternative to the earlier 3100 and 7200 Series panel-mount instruments. The core architectural principle is a passive backplane carrying a proprietary parallel bus, into which individual transducer interface, signal conditioning, and power supply modules are inserted. Early revisions of the platform used discrete analog signal chains with relay-based alarm outputs. Subsequent hardware revisions introduced programmable setpoints, 4–20 mA analog outputs, and RS-232/RS-422 serial communication ports for integration with early DCS and SCADA systems. The 3300 Series operates in parallel with the later 3500 Series, which introduced a fully digital, networked architecture with Modbus and Ethernet connectivity. Many facilities continue to operate 3300 Series racks alongside 3500 Series systems, creating mixed-generation compatibility challenges that require careful attention to transducer wiring standards, power supply voltage rails, and alarm relay logic. The 3300 Series is now classified as a mature/end-of-life platform by Bently Nevada (a Baker Hughes company), meaning new production of certain modules has been discontinued. Long-term maintenance support, including tested surplus and refurbished modules, is therefore essential for facilities committed to extending the operational life of existing installations.

3300 Series Full Catalog & Functionalities (SKU List)

The following SKUs represent the core module range of the Bently Nevada 3300 Series, organized by functional category. Each entry reflects a distinct hardware module with a defined measurement or power function within the rack system.

Power Supply Modules

  • 3300/14: DC input power supply module; converts external DC source to regulated internal rack voltages for 3300 Series backplane.
  • 3300/15: AC input power supply module; provides regulated power from 115/230 VAC mains to the 3300 Series rack bus.
  • 3300/16: Dual-input redundant power supply; supports automatic switchover between two independent power sources for high-availability installations.

Proximity (Eddy-Current) Transducer Interface Modules

  • 3300/20: Single-channel proximity transducer interface; conditions raw eddy-current probe signal for shaft radial displacement measurement.
  • 3300/25: Dual-channel proximity monitor; simultaneous X-Y radial vibration measurement for a single bearing plane.
  • 3300/46: Thrust position monitor; measures axial shaft displacement using a single proximity probe channel with configurable alert/danger setpoints.
  • 3300/47: Differential expansion monitor; tracks relative thermal growth between rotor and casing using two proximity probe inputs.
  • 3300/48: Eccentricity monitor; measures shaft bow at slow-roll speeds prior to turbine startup sequences.

Velocity Transducer Interface Modules

  • 3300/50: Single-channel velocity monitor; interfaces with seismic velocity transducers for casing vibration measurement.
  • 3300/55: Dual-channel velocity monitor; simultaneous two-axis casing vibration measurement from velocity-type sensors.

Accelerometer Interface Modules

  • 3300/60: Single-channel accelerometer monitor; conditions piezoelectric accelerometer signals for high-frequency bearing defect detection.
  • 3300/65: Dual-channel accelerometer monitor; two independent accelerometer inputs with independent alarm relay outputs per channel.

Speed and Phase Reference Modules

  • 3300/93: Tachometer/speed monitor; processes once-per-revolution keyphasor signals for rotational speed measurement and phase reference.
  • 3300/95: Dual-speed monitor; supports two independent tachometer inputs for multi-shaft or redundant speed measurement configurations.

Communication and System Modules

  • 3300/10: System monitor and communication interface; provides rack-level diagnostics and serial data output to host DCS or data acquisition systems.
  • 3300/12: Relay output module; provides additional dry-contact relay outputs for alarm and shutdown logic beyond the capacity of individual monitor cards.
