Bently Nevada 3300 Series Technical Notes

The Bently Nevada 3300 Series is one of the most widely deployed machinery protection and condition monitoring platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, LNG terminals, and crude oil refineries, the 3300 system provides continuous vibration, position, and speed monitoring for rotating and reciprocating machinery. Its modular rack-based architecture — built around the 3300/05 and 3300/10 rack formats — allows plant engineers to configure monitoring channels for radial vibration, axial position, differential expansion, eccentricity, speed, and phase reference. The system communicates via 4–20 mA analog outputs and relay contacts, with optional integration into DCS environments through Modbus RTU or proprietary System 1 software. Installed base in excess of 200,000 racks globally makes the 3300 Series the de facto standard for API 670-compliant machinery protection in critical rotating equipment applications.

The Evolution of 3300 Series Architecture

The Bently Nevada 3300 Series was introduced in the late 1980s as a successor to the 7200 Series, addressing the need for a more compact, rack-integrated monitoring solution. The original 3300/05 five-slot rack and 3300/10 ten-slot rack established the physical form factor that persists across all subsequent revisions. Early modules used discrete analog circuitry with fixed-range transducer interfaces; later revisions introduced software-configurable full-scale ranges and improved EMI immunity to meet IEC 61000 requirements for industrial environments.

Quality Control for the 3300 Series Range

The 3300 Series monitor modules incorporate multi-layer backplane bus communication between rack slots, requiring specialized test procedures beyond standard power-on verification. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all 3300 Series units prior to shipment:

  • Backplane continuity test: All inter-slot signal lines verified for continuity and isolation resistance (>10 MΩ between signal and chassis ground).
  • Transducer simulation: 330180 and 330130 Proximitor sensors are tested using a calibrated eddy-current target simulator to verify gap voltage output (nominally -7.87 V/mm at -24 VDC supply) across the full measurement range.
  • Relay output verification: Trip and alarm relay contacts on monitor modules are cycled under rated load (30 VDC, 1 A resistive) to confirm contact integrity and setpoint accuracy.
  • 4–20 mA output calibration: Analog outputs are verified against a precision current meter at 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of full-scale range.
  • Thermal soak: Modules are operated at 50°C ambient for 2 hours to screen for latent component failures prior to packaging.
  • Visual and mechanical inspection: Connector pins, PCB solder joints, and module locking levers are inspected under 10× magnification.
