Bently Nevada 3300 Series Technical Notes

The Bently Nevada 3300 Series represents one of the most widely deployed eddy-current proximity measurement systems in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, LNG terminals, offshore platforms, and rotating machinery facilities, the 3300 Series has served as the backbone of machinery protection and condition monitoring programs for decades. Its modular architecture — built around the Proximitor sensor and signal conditioning electronics — established the industry standard for non-contact shaft vibration, position, and speed measurement on critical rotating assets including steam turbines, gas compressors, centrifugal pumps, and gearboxes.

The 3300 Series integrates directly with Bently Nevada's System 1 software platform and is compatible with the broader 3500 rack-based monitoring ecosystem as a field sensor input source. Its continued presence in aging plant infrastructure makes spare part availability a persistent operational concern for maintenance engineers worldwide.

The Evolution of 3300 Series Architecture

The 3300 Series was introduced by Bently Nevada Corporation — later acquired by GE in 2002, and subsequently by Baker Hughes in 2017 — as a field-deployable proximity measurement solution designed to complement rack-mounted monitoring systems. Early variants used discrete analog signal conditioning with fixed measurement ranges. Over successive generations, the series incorporated extended temperature ratings, improved EMI shielding, and standardized 5-meter, 9-meter, and extension cable configurations to accommodate varying installation geometries.

The core operating principle remains consistent across all 3300 variants: a driver/oscillator circuit within the Proximitor sensor energizes a probe tip coil, generating a high-frequency electromagnetic field. Conductive target material (typically shaft steel) within the probe's sensing range induces eddy currents, attenuating the field in proportion to the gap distance. The Proximitor converts this attenuation into a DC voltage output, typically scaled at –200 mV/mil or –7.87 V/mm, directly readable by monitoring system inputs.

Compatibility considerations are critical when sourcing replacement units. Cable length, probe tip diameter (5 mm, 8 mm, 11 mm), and system voltage supply (–24 VDC) must match the original installation. Mixing probe and Proximitor assemblies from different sub-series without verification against the original calibration data can introduce measurement error and compromise machinery protection integrity.

As the 3300 Series has entered its end-of-life phase under Baker Hughes / Bently Nevada's current product roadmap, many models are no longer manufactured. The recommended migration path is toward the 3500 Series rack system with integrated I/O modules; however, full system replacement carries capital costs that are prohibitive for facilities with stable, well-maintained rotating assets. Sourcing verified spare 3300 Series components remains the most cost-effective strategy for extending asset service life by 5–10 years.

Quality Control for the 3300 Series Range

The 3300 Series Proximitor sensor is an analog precision instrument. Its output accuracy depends on the integrity of the internal oscillator circuit, the coaxial cable impedance, and the probe tip coil geometry. DriveKNMS applies the following inspection protocol to all 3300 Series units prior to dispatch:

  • Step 1 – Visual Inspection: Examination of connector pins, cable jacket, and housing for corrosion, mechanical damage, or evidence of field repair.
  • Step 2 – Oscillator Frequency Verification: Confirmation that the internal driver circuit operates within the specified frequency band (typically 1.0 MHz for 5mm probes, 500 kHz for 8mm probes).
  • Step 3 – Output Voltage Calibration Check: Gap simulation using a calibrated target fixture to verify the –200 mV/mil (–7.87 V/mm) output scale factor across the linear measurement range.
  • Step 4 – Cable Continuity and Impedance Test: Coaxial cable tested for center conductor continuity, shield integrity, and characteristic impedance match to the Proximitor input specification.
  • Step 5 – Electrolytic Capacitor Assessment: Internal capacitors inspected for ESR degradation, particularly relevant for units with extended storage histories or prior high-temperature service exposure.
