Bently Nevada 3300 Series Technical Notes

The Bently Nevada 3300 Series is a rack-based continuous vibration monitoring system deployed across the global heavy process industry. It holds a dominant installed base in petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, LNG terminals, and crude oil refineries. The system monitors shaft relative vibration, axial position, eccentricity, speed, and phase reference on rotating machinery including steam turbines, gas compressors, centrifugal pumps, and gearboxes. Its modular architecture allows field-replaceable I/O cards, transducer interface modules, and communication adapters without full system shutdown, making it the preferred platform for facilities operating under continuous-run mandates with multi-year turnaround intervals.

The Evolution of 3300 Series Architecture

The 3300 Series was introduced by Bently Nevada in the late 1980s as a successor to the 3500 predecessor rack concept, establishing a standardized 19-inch rack form factor with a dedicated power supply bay, monitor card slots, and a system monitor interface. Early revisions used analog signal conditioning with discrete relay outputs. Mid-generation revisions introduced Transient Data Interface (TDI) modules enabling waveform capture and orbit plot generation. Later iterations added Ethernet-based communication via the 3300/16 System Monitor and Modbus RTU/TCP gateway cards, allowing integration with DCS platforms including Honeywell Experion, Emerson DeltaV, and ABB 800xA.

Quality Control for the 3300 Series Range

The 3300 Series backplane uses a proprietary differential signal bus for inter-module communication. Standard bench testing is insufficient to validate module integrity; DriveKNMS employs a dedicated 3300 rack test fixture that replicates the full backplane electrical environment. Each module undergoes the following verification sequence before dispatch:

Proximitor sensors are tested for gap voltage linearity across the full measurement range (0–2.54 mm for 8mm tip sensors) using a calibrated target disc at controlled temperature. Extension cables are tested for shield continuity, conductor resistance, and connector pin integrity under mechanical stress. Power supply modules are load-tested at 100% rated current with ripple voltage measurement on both output rails. System Monitor and I/O cards are validated for Modbus register mapping accuracy and relay output switching under simulated trip conditions. All tested units are issued a DriveKNMS inspection record with test date, technician ID, and measured parameters.
