Bently Nevada 3300 Series Technical Notes

The Bently Nevada 3300 Series is one of the most widely deployed eddy-current proximity transducer systems in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, LNG terminals, offshore platforms, and rotating machinery facilities, the 3300 Series serves as the primary vibration, position, and speed measurement infrastructure for critical turbomachinery protection. Its 8 mm and 5 mm probe configurations are recognized as the de facto standard for API 670-compliant machinery protection systems. The series interfaces directly with Bently Nevada's 3500 Rack System and legacy 3300 rack monitors, making it a foundational component in both active plant operations and long-term maintenance programs.

The Evolution of 3300 Series Architecture

Early 3300 Series probes operated on a 200 kHz oscillation frequency with a nominal sensitivity of 7.87 V/mm (200 mV/mil), a specification that became the industry standard and was later codified in API 670. Over successive generations, Bently Nevada refined the probe tip geometry, cable jacketing materials (transitioning from standard PVC to high-temperature PTFE and armored variants), and connector termination standards to address installation environments ranging from cryogenic compressors to high-temperature steam turbines.

The introduction of the 3300 XL 8 mm and 3300 XL 5 mm sub-series represented a significant architectural update, incorporating extended temperature ratings, improved EMI shielding, and compatibility with the then-new 3500 Series rack monitors. The 3300 NSv (Non-Standard voltage) variant addressed applications requiring non-standard gap voltages for specialized rotor materials. As the 3500 Series became the dominant platform through the 2000s and 2010s, the 3300 Series transitioned from primary specification to legacy-support status — however, the installed base remains enormous, and replacement demand continues across all major industrial regions.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete 3300 Series Parts

The Bently Nevada 3300 Series entered end-of-active-production status for several sub-models following the widespread adoption of the 3500 Series platform. Baker Hughes (the current owner of the Bently Nevada product line) has progressively reduced factory support for legacy 3300 rack monitors and early-generation Proximitor sensors. However, the installed base across refineries, power generation facilities, and compressor stations globally means that demand for replacement probes, extension cables, and Proximitor sensors remains consistent.

  • Direct replacement probes and cables for all standard 3300 Series configurations
  • Proximitor sensor replacements for both -24 VDC standard and NSv variants
  • Legacy 3300 rack monitor modules (3300/20, 3300/25, 3300/55) from RFQ-reviewed sourcing status
  • Cross-reference support for identifying equivalent 3500 Series upgrades where direct replacement is no longer available
  • Documentation packages including calibration certificates and material traceability records on request

Quality Control for the 3300 Series Range

The 3300 Series proximity transducer system is a precision measurement assembly. Signal integrity depends on the matched performance of the probe, extension cable, and Proximitor sensor as a calibrated set. DriveKNMS applies the following verification procedures to all 3300 Series inventory:

  • Probe tip inspection: Visual and dimensional check of probe tip geometry against OEM specifications. Tip damage or corrosion is cause for rejection.
  • Cable continuity and impedance testing: Each extension cable is tested for center conductor continuity, shield integrity, and characteristic impedance (nominally 50 Ω for RG-58 type) using a calibrated TDR instrument.
  • Proximitor sensor functional test: Each Proximitor sensor is powered at -24 VDC and tested against a calibrated target at known gap distances to verify output voltage linearity and sensitivity (7.87 V/mm ± 5%).
  • System-level calibration verification: Where possible, probe-cable-Proximitor assemblies are tested as matched sets to confirm end-to-end system sensitivity within API 670 tolerances.
  • Connector and termination inspection: All BNC, MIL-spec, and proprietary connectors are inspected for pin integrity, thread condition, and environmental seal condition.
