Bently Nevada 3300 Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of 3300 Series Architecture

The 3300 Series was introduced in the late 1980s as a successor to the 3100 and 3200 platform families, consolidating proximity probe signal conditioning, velocity, and accelerometer inputs into a unified 19-inch rack format. Early revisions used discrete analog circuitry with hardwired relay outputs; subsequent generations integrated microprocessor-based signal processing, enabling configurable alert/danger setpoints and Modbus RTU communication. The introduction of the 3500 Series in the mid-1990s positioned it as the next-generation successor, but the 3300 Series remained in active production and widespread use due to its lower per-channel cost and simpler integration profile in brownfield facilities.

Compatibility considerations are significant for maintenance engineers: 3300 Series modules use a proprietary backplane bus that is electrically incompatible with the 3500 rack. Transducer wiring, however, follows the same Bently Nevada proximity probe standard (5 V, 200 mV/mil sensitivity), allowing sensor reuse during platform migrations. The series entered its end-of-active-production phase in the 2010s, though Baker Hughes continues to supply spare modules through its authorized channel. Third-party MRO suppliers such as DriveKNMS maintain parallel inventory of both new-surplus and refurbished units to support lifecycle extension programs.

Quality Control for the 3300 Series Range

The 3300 Series backplane employs a proprietary differential bus architecture that requires module-level functional validation prior to installation. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all 3300 Series units: incoming inspection verifies physical integrity of edge connectors, relay contacts, and terminal block seating. Functional testing replicates the rack environment using a dedicated 3300 Series test chassis, applying calibrated proximity probe simulation signals across the full measurement range (0–80 mil, 200 mV/mil) and verifying alert/danger relay actuation at configured setpoints. Communication modules undergo Modbus RTU frame integrity testing at 9600 and 19200 baud. All test data is logged and supplied with the unit shipment as a functional test certificate.
