Technical Dossier
The Bently Nevada 3300 Series is an eddy-current proximity transducer system engineered for continuous, non-contact measurement of shaft vibration, position, and speed in rotating machinery. It is one of the most widely deployed condition monitoring platforms in global heavy industry, with documented installations in petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, LNG terminals, offshore platforms, and large-scale compressor trains. The system operates on the principle of electromagnetic eddy-current induction, providing a linear DC voltage output proportional to the gap between the probe tip and the observed conductive target surface. Its architecture — comprising a probe, extension cable, and proximitor/driver — has remained the reference standard for API 670-compliant machinery protection systems for over four decades.

The 3300 Series was introduced by Bently Nevada (now a Baker Hughes company) as a successor to earlier 7200 and 3000 Series transducer systems. The original 3300 architecture standardized on an 8 mm probe diameter with a 5 mm sensing range, establishing the metric and non-metric (imperial) variants that persist across the entire product line. Early configurations used a fixed-length integral cable; subsequent revisions introduced the armored extension cable system, allowing field-configurable total cable lengths of 5 m, 9 m, and 15 m by combining probe cables and extension cables with matched proximitor drivers.
The 3300 XL upgrade generation introduced extended linear range probes (up to 2.54 mm linear range for 8 mm probes) and improved EMI rejection, addressing compatibility issues encountered in variable-frequency drive (VFD) environments. The 3300 HTPS (High Temperature Proximity System) variant extended operating temperature to 177°C (350°F) for turbine bearing housings. Integration with the System 1 condition monitoring software platform added digital communication capability, while the physical transducer hardware remained backward-compatible with legacy 3500 Series rack-mounted monitors. As of 2024, the 3300 Series is in a mature/sustained phase; Bently Nevada continues to supply replacement parts and new units, but the primary development focus has shifted to the Velomitor and 3500 rack ecosystem. Long-term maintenance customers should note that certain early-revision proximitor models have been superseded by direct drop-in replacements with identical pinouts and output characteristics.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of 3300 Series components, including discontinued proximitor revisions and early-generation probe assemblies that are no longer listed in Bently Nevada’s active catalog. For plants operating legacy 3500 Series monitors with 3300 transducer inputs, we supply matched probe-cable-proximitor sets pre-verified for system compatibility. Our sourcing network covers surplus industrial distributors, decommissioned plant inventories, and authorized secondary-market channels across North America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific. All obsolete parts are supplied with full traceability documentation including original manufacturer lot codes where available. For end-of-life machinery protection systems where a full platform migration is not feasible, DriveKNMS provides lifecycle extension support: sourcing, testing, and warehousing of critical spare sets on a consignment or blanket-order basis.
Each 3300 Series component processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured verification protocol before dispatch. Proximity probes are tested for coil impedance (nominal 1.0 Ω ± 10% at 25°C) and tip geometry integrity using calibrated gap measurement fixtures. Extension cables are continuity-tested end-to-end and inspected for jacket abrasion, connector pin seating, and shield continuity. Proximitor sensors are bench-powered at -24 VDC and output-verified across the full linear range (0.25 mm to 2.54 mm gap) using a certified target disc of AISI 4140 steel, matching the API 670 reference material specification. Output linearity deviation must remain within ±0.5% of the nominal scale factor (200 mV/mil or 7.87 V/mm) to pass. Units exhibiting drift, non-linearity, or intermittent output are quarantined and not released for sale. Test records are retained for a minimum of five years and are available to customers upon request.
