Bently Nevada 3300 Series Technical Notes

The Bently Nevada 3300 Series proximity probe system is one of the most widely deployed eddy-current sensing platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, LNG terminals, offshore platforms, and rotating machinery facilities, the 3300 Series provides continuous, non-contact measurement of shaft radial vibration, axial position, and differential expansion. Its compatibility with the System 1 and System 3500 monitoring architectures has made it the de facto standard for API 670-compliant machinery protection on turbines, compressors, pumps, and gearboxes operating in critical service.

The 330104-00-22-10-02-CN is an 8mm diameter proximity probe with a 200 mil (5.08 mm) linear range, supplied with a 2-meter (CN) integral cable, designed for use with the 330180 extension cable and 3300 XL 8mm driver. It is a direct-fit replacement for legacy 330104 variants across all 3300 Series monitor racks.

The Evolution of 3300 Series Architecture

The Bently Nevada 3300 Series was introduced in the 1980s as a modular, field-replaceable eddy-current proximity sensing system. Early-generation probes used a 5mm tip diameter and were paired with dedicated proximitor drivers mounted in the 3300/16 and 3300/20 monitor housings. These early variants operated on a ±24 VDC supply and produced a -18 VDC nominal output at the midpoint of their linear range.

The architecture evolved through the 3300 XL platform, which introduced the 8mm probe standard (330104 series) and the 5mm probe standard (330101 series), each paired with matched extension cables (330180 for 8mm, 330130 for 5mm) and dedicated proximitor/driver modules. The XL platform extended the linear range, improved temperature stability from -35°C to +177°C at the probe tip, and introduced the NSv (Non-Standard voltage) output option for compatibility with third-party monitors.

By the 2000s, Bently Nevada (acquired by GE in 2002, later Baker Hughes) transitioned critical monitoring to the System 3500 rack, which accepts 3300 XL probes directly via the 3500/42M and 3500/40M proximity monitor modules. The 3300 Series probes remain fully compatible with System 3500 and continue to be specified in new installations where API 670 compliance is required. The series is now in a mature/sustaining lifecycle phase; no new architectural revisions are planned, and long-term maintenance support is the primary commercial driver for this product line.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete 3300 Series Parts

The 3300 Series has entered a sustaining/mature lifecycle phase. Baker Hughes (Bently Nevada) continues to manufacture select high-volume variants such as the 330104-00-22-10-02-CN, but lower-volume cable lengths, NSv output variants, and early-generation 3300/16 and 3300/20 monitor cards are increasingly difficult to source through standard distribution channels.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of 3300 Series spare parts, including discontinued probe variants, legacy extension cables, and obsolete proximitor modules. All units are sourced from decommissioned plant inventories, certified OEM overstock, and controlled third-party channels. DriveKNMS provides lifecycle extension support for facilities operating 3300 Series hardware beyond the OEM's active support window, including cross-reference matching for superseded part numbers and compatibility verification against System 3500 monitor firmware revisions.

Quality Control for the 3300 Series Range

The 3300 Series proximity probe system presents specific quality control challenges due to the matched-system requirement: probe, extension cable, and proximitor/driver must be calibrated as a set to achieve the specified sensitivity of 200 mV/mil (7.87 V/mm). DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all 3300 Series units prior to shipment:

Gap voltage linearity test: Each probe is tested against a calibrated AISI 4140 steel target across the full 200 mil linear range. Output voltage is recorded at 25 mil increments and compared against the OEM linearity specification (±1% of full-scale output).

Sensitivity verification: Probe sensitivity is measured at the nominal gap (50 mil / 1.27 mm) and confirmed at 200 mV/mil ±10% per API 670 Table 1 requirements.

Cable continuity and insulation resistance: Integral cable and extension cable are tested for conductor continuity and insulation resistance (>100 MΩ at 500 VDC) to detect micro-fractures in the coaxial shield.

Connector inspection: All MIL-C-5015 and 10-32 UNF connectors are inspected for pin straightness, thread integrity, and corrosion. Damaged connectors are replaced with OEM-specification parts.
