Technical Dossier
The Bently Nevada NSv (Non-contacting Vibration) Proximity Probe series is a foundational component of the 3300 and 3500 Series machinery protection systems deployed across global heavy industry. These probes are installed in continuous operation environments including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, LNG terminals, and large-scale rotating machinery facilities. The NSv series measures radial shaft vibration, axial position, and differential expansion on turbines, compressors, pumps, and motors — providing the primary vibration signal to Bently Nevada monitoring racks. Their eddy-current operating principle requires no physical contact with the rotating shaft, enabling indefinite service life under correct installation conditions. The 330905 sub-series specifically addresses standard 5mm probe tip diameter configurations with varying cable lengths and connector options, making it one of the most widely specified probe families in the installed base.
Bently Nevada's proximity probe technology originated in the 1960s with the introduction of eddy-current displacement transducers for rotating machinery. The early 7200 Series established the foundational operating principle: a probe tip generates a radio-frequency electromagnetic field; the proximity of a conductive target (shaft) modulates that field; the driver/oscillator converts the modulation into a DC voltage proportional to gap distance.
The 3300 Series (introduced in the 1980s) standardized the probe-extension cable-driver system architecture. The NSv designation was introduced to differentiate probes optimized for the 3300 XL 8mm and 5mm driver systems. The 330905 family (5mm tip) and 330903 family (8mm tip) became the dominant field-installed configurations. The 3500 Series rack (introduced in the 1990s) maintained backward compatibility with NSv probes, preserving the installed base investment.
As of 2026, the NSv series is in the mature/end-of-active-production phase. Bently Nevada (a Baker Hughes company) has transitioned new installations toward the 3500/42M and Velomitor CT sensor platforms. However, the NSv probe installed base in operating plants remains extensive, and direct replacement parts continue to be required for maintenance, turnaround, and emergency repair cycles. Long-term maintenance support for NSv probes is a primary service category at DriveKNMS.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly installed NSv Proximity Probe configurations. Models are organized by tip diameter and cable/connector specification.

NSv Proximity Probes require specialized verification procedures distinct from standard electronic component testing. DriveKNMS applies the following protocol to all NSv units prior to dispatch:
Gap Voltage Calibration Verification: Each probe is tested against a certified 4140 steel target at defined gap increments (0.25mm to 2.5mm). Output voltage linearity is verified against Bently Nevada published scale factors (200 mV/mil for 5mm probes; 100 mV/mil for 8mm probes).
Frequency Response Check: Probe response is verified across the 0–10 kHz bandwidth to confirm no resonance anomalies in the eddy-current circuit.
Cable Continuity and Insulation Resistance: Full cable assembly (probe body + integral cable + extension cable) is tested for conductor continuity and insulation resistance (>100 MΩ at 500 VDC).
Connector Integrity: BNC and conduit-entry connectors are inspected for pin alignment, thread condition, and environmental seal integrity.
Driver Compatibility Test: Where requested, probes are tested as a matched set with a 3300 XL or 3500 series driver/oscillator to confirm system-level output within specification.
