Technical Dossier
The Bently Nevada 990 Series is a family of direct-vibration transmitters engineered for continuous machinery protection in heavy industrial environments. Deployed extensively across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, and large rotating equipment installations, the 990 Series converts raw vibration signals from proximity probes into industry-standard 4–20 mA outputs compatible with DCS, PLC, and safety instrumented systems (SIS). Its compact DIN-rail form factor and loop-powered architecture made it the de facto standard for retrofit and greenfield vibration monitoring projects throughout the 1990s and 2000s. Installed base estimates place the 990 Series in tens of thousands of turbine, compressor, and pump trains globally, with active maintenance contracts still running at major EPC contractors and national oil companies.
The 990 Series was introduced as a standalone, single-channel transmitter designed to interface directly with 3300 XL and 7200 Series proximity probe systems. Early hardware revisions (Rev A/B) supported only radial vibration measurement with fixed full-scale ranges of 10 mil pp and 20 mil pp. Subsequent revisions introduced field-selectable measurement ranges via internal DIP switches, expanding compatibility to axial position, thrust, and eccentricity applications.
The architecture is fundamentally analog: the module accepts a buffered signal from a proximitor/extension cable, applies internal signal conditioning, and outputs a proportional 4–20 mA current loop signal. There is no onboard digital communication bus (no HART, no Profibus), which defines both its strength—deterministic, low-latency output—and its limitation in modern IIoT-integrated plants.
The following SKUs represent the core of the 990 Series product range, organized by measurement function. All units are single-channel, loop-powered (24 VDC nominal), and output 4–20 mA unless otherwise noted.

Customers operating under IEC 61511 or ISA-84 functional safety frameworks should note that use of non-OEM replacement parts requires documented change management review. DriveKNMS provides full traceability documentation—including country of origin, storage history, and inspection records—to support MOC (Management of Change) submissions.
The 990 Series transmitter's core function—accurate 4–20 mA signal conversion from a proximity probe input—requires verification across the full signal chain before any unit is released for field installation. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all 990 Series units processed through its facility:
Input Signal Simulation: A calibrated signal generator replicates the buffered output of a 3300 XL or 7200 Series proximitor across the specified frequency range (typically 10–1000 Hz for radial vibration units). Input amplitude is swept across 0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, and 100% of full scale.
Output Linearity Verification: The 4–20 mA output is measured at each input setpoint using a calibrated loop calibrator (Fluke 789 or equivalent). Linearity error must not exceed ±0.5% of full scale per original Bently Nevada factory specification.
Power Supply Rejection: Supply voltage is varied from 18 VDC to 32 VDC to confirm output stability within specification across the full operating range.
Temperature Soak: Extended-temperature variants (suffix -02-xx) undergo a 4-hour thermal soak at -20°C and +70°C with output monitored continuously for drift exceeding 1% of span.
Housing and Connector Inspection: Terminal blocks, DIN-rail clips, and label integrity are inspected and replaced where worn. Units with cracked housings or corroded terminals are rejected from resale inventory.
All test results are logged to a unit-level inspection record retained for a minimum of 5 years and available to customers upon request.
