Technical Dossier
The ABB NTU (Network Termination Unit) series is a family of field termination and signal conditioning modules designed for use within ABB's Advant Controller and MOD 300 Distributed Control System (DCS) platforms. These units serve as the physical interface layer between field instrumentation and the DCS I/O subsystem, providing signal isolation, relay output switching, and digital/analog termination functions. The NTU series is installed across critical heavy-industry sectors including petroleum refining, chemical processing, nuclear power generation, pulp and paper manufacturing, and offshore oil and gas platforms. Installed base counts in the tens of thousands of nodes globally, with many facilities operating continuous processes that preclude system replacement without extended lifecycle support for legacy hardware.
The NTU series was introduced as part of ABB's Advant OCS (Open Control System) architecture in the late 1980s, designed to complement the AC 450 and AC 460 controller families and the MOD 300 process control system inherited from Taylor Instruments. Early NTU modules operated on a passive backplane with direct wiring to S800 and S900 I/O clusters. As the Advant platform matured through the 1990s, NTU variants were expanded to support digital output relay functions (the -E suffix denoting relay output with enhanced isolation), analog input termination, and HART-pass-through configurations.
By the mid-2000s, ABB transitioned its primary DCS offering to the System 800xA platform, rendering the NTU series officially end-of-life for new projects. However, the installed base remained active, and ABB continued to supply spare parts through its authorized channel until approximately 2015–2018 depending on variant. Post-discontinuation, procurement of NTU modules shifted to specialist distributors and MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Operations) suppliers capable of sourcing tested surplus and refurbished stock. Compatibility between NTU variants and specific backplane revisions is a known integration constraint; substitution of one NTU sub-type for another requires verification of backplane slot addressing and relay contact rating.
The following SKUs represent verified members of the ABB NTU termination unit family used within Advant and MOD 300 DCS architectures. Modules are categorized by primary function.

Power & Communication Termination
The NTU series entered end-of-life status progressively between 2012 and 2018. ABB's authorized spare parts channel no longer stocks the majority of NTU variants as of 2024. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for obsolete ABB Advant and MOD 300 components, including the NTU termination unit family. Stock is sourced from decommissioned plant equipment, verified surplus from authorized integrators, and controlled refurbishment programs. All units are subject to pre-shipment functional testing before dispatch. DriveKNMS provides documentation of test results upon request and can support emergency breakdown orders with expedited logistics. For facilities operating continuous processes where an unplanned shutdown carries significant financial or safety consequences, DriveKNMS recommends establishing a consignment stock agreement for critical NTU variants identified in the plant's critical spare parts register.
NTU termination units incorporate relay output contacts, optocoupler isolation stages, and passive backplane bus connectors that are subject to specific failure modes in long-term service: relay contact wear, optocoupler degradation under thermal cycling, and backplane connector oxidation. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all NTU units prior to shipment. Each unit undergoes visual inspection for physical damage, connector pin integrity check, relay coil resistance measurement, contact continuity and isolation resistance test at rated voltage, and functional simulation of the DCS backplane communication interface using ABB-compatible test fixtures. Units that fail any test parameter are quarantined and not offered for sale. Test records are retained for a minimum of 24 months and are available to customers upon request. Refurbished units are clearly identified as such in all documentation.
