Technical Dossier
The ABB PBA800 Process Bus Adaptor is a critical communication interface module within ABB's AC800M controller platform, one of the most widely deployed DCS architectures in global heavy industry. Installations span petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, offshore oil & gas platforms, pulp and paper mills, and large-scale water treatment facilities. The PBA800 series provides the physical and logical bridge between the AC800M controller backplane and the PROFIBUS DP fieldbus network, enabling deterministic, high-integrity process data exchange across distributed I/O nodes. Its role in safety-critical environments has made it a long-term fixture in plant asset registers worldwide, with installed base units routinely maintained beyond their nominal product lifecycle.
The PBA800 was introduced as part of ABB's second-generation AC800M modular controller ecosystem, succeeding the earlier Advant OCS and Master Bus 300 communication architectures. Early revisions of the PBA800 supported PROFIBUS DP-V0 at 12 Mbit/s, with hardware revisions progressively adding DP-V1 and DP-V2 acyclic services, enabling integration with intelligent field devices such as HART-over-PROFIBUS gateways and PA segment couplers. The module communicates with the PM861, PM864, PM866, and PM891 processor modules via the internal S100 I/O bus, and is mounted in the TB840 or TB842 termination units. Compatibility constraints exist between firmware revisions of the PBA800 and specific AC800M controller firmware versions; cross-referencing the ABB Library document 3BSE035980 is mandatory before substitution. Later hardware revisions introduced redundancy support, allowing dual PBA800 modules to operate in hot-standby configuration for high-availability PROFIBUS segments. The series has entered the mature/end-of-active-development phase; ABB continues to supply spare units and firmware patches under its Extended Lifecycle Support program, but no new feature development is planned.
The following SKUs represent the verified PBA800 series and closely associated AC800M communication and I/O modules. Each entry reflects a distinct hardware variant or functional role within the platform:
PBA800: PROFIBUS DP-V0/V1 adaptor, single-channel, for AC800M S100 bus, 12 Mbit/s max.
PBA800A: Revised hardware revision of PBA800 with improved EMC shielding and extended temperature tolerance.
PBA800B: DP-V2 capable variant supporting isochronous mode for motion-critical PROFIBUS segments.
CI854: PROFIBUS DP master module for AC800M, direct functional peer to PBA800 in newer deployments.
CI854A: Updated CI854 with redundancy support and extended diagnostic reporting via MMS.
CI855: PROFIBUS DP slave interface for AC800M, used in controller-to-controller PROFIBUS topologies.
CI856: DeviceNet adaptor module for AC800M, alternative fieldbus interface in the same form factor.
CI857: HART multiplexer interface module for AC800M, enabling HART variable access over S100 bus.
CI858: DriveBus adaptor for AC800M, used for high-speed communication with ABB ACS drives.
CI860: IEC 61850 Edition 1 communication interface for AC800M substation automation applications.
CI862: IEC 61850 Edition 2 interface, successor to CI860 with GOOSE and Sampled Values support.
CI865: Modbus TCP/RTU interface module for AC800M legacy system integration.
CI867: EtherNet/IP adaptor for AC800M, enabling integration with Rockwell and third-party EIP devices.
CI868: IEC 60870-5-101/104 interface for SCADA and energy management system connectivity.
CI871: PROFINET IO controller module for AC800M, replacing PROFIBUS in new greenfield projects.
TB840: Termination unit for PBA800/CI854, provides PROFIBUS DB9 connector and bus termination.
TB842: Redundant termination unit for dual PBA800 hot-standby configuration.
PM864A: AC800M processor module, primary host for PBA800 in mid-range DCS configurations.
PM891: High-performance AC800M processor, supports up to 12 communication modules including PBA800.
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of PBA800 series modules, including early hardware revisions that have been discontinued from ABB's standard distribution channels. For plants operating AC800M systems installed prior to 2010, original PBA800 and PBA800A units are frequently required for like-for-like replacement to avoid firmware compatibility audits. DriveKNMS sources these units through certified secondary market channels, performs incoming inspection against ABB hardware revision documentation, and provides traceability records on request. For customers requiring long-term supply agreements covering multi-year maintenance windows, framework contracts are available. All units are stored in ESD-controlled environments and shipped with anti-static packaging compliant with IEC 61340-5-1.
Each PBA800 unit processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured verification protocol specific to the S100 backplane communication architecture. Testing includes: backplane bus signal integrity verification using AC800M test fixtures; PROFIBUS DP layer 1 and layer 2 conformance checks at 9.6 kbit/s, 1.5 Mbit/s, and 12 Mbit/s baud rates; DP-V1 acyclic read/write service validation; hardware revision identification and cross-check against ABB firmware compatibility matrix; visual inspection of the DB9 PROFIBUS connector and internal bus edge connector for oxidation or mechanical damage; and 48-hour burn-in under cyclic communication load. Modules that fail any stage are quarantined and not returned to inventory.
