ABB PM152 Series: Comprehensive Module Range and Technical Overview

The ABB PM152 series comprises the central processing unit (CPU) modules deployed within the ABB Advant Controller 160 (AC160) and Masterpiece 200 (MP200) distributed control system (DCS) platforms. These controllers have been installed across global heavy industry sectors including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power auxiliary systems, pulp and paper mills, offshore platforms, and large-scale water treatment facilities. The AC160/MP200 architecture was ABB's primary mid-range DCS offering from the late 1980s through the 2000s, and a substantial installed base remains in operation under long-term maintenance contracts. The PM152 processor module is the computational core of this architecture, responsible for executing control programs, managing I/O bus communication, and interfacing with operator stations via the MasterBus 300 (MB300) network.

The Evolution of PM152 Architecture

The AC160/MP200 platform was introduced in the late 1980s as a successor to ABB's earlier MASTER series controllers. The PM152 CPU family evolved through several hardware revisions to address processing speed, memory capacity, and communication protocol support. Early variants operated on proprietary ABB backplane buses with limited external communication options. Subsequent revisions introduced expanded SRAM, support for redundant CPU configurations, and compatibility with the MasterBus 300E (MB300E) extended network. The platform reached end-of-production status in the mid-2000s as ABB transitioned customers toward the System 800xA and AC800M architectures. However, due to the 20–30 year operational lifecycle typical of DCS installations in nuclear and refinery environments, PM152 modules remain in active demand for corrective and preventive maintenance. Migration to AC800M or System 800xA requires full engineering re-scoping, making like-for-like PM152 replacement the preferred strategy for most asset owners through 2030 and beyond.

Quality Control for the PM152 Range

PM152 CPU modules and associated AC160 I/O cards undergo a structured inspection and functional verification process at DriveKNMS. Physical inspection covers backplane connector pin integrity, capacitor condition assessment, ASIC and EPROM seating verification, and board-level corrosion screening. Functional testing is performed using AC160-compatible rack assemblies with active MB300 bus simulation to verify CPU boot sequence, program memory read/write cycles, and I/O bus arbitration. Communication modules (MB300, SC510) are tested for protocol handshake integrity under simulated network load. Analog I/O modules are calibrated against NIST-traceable references. Each unit is assigned a test record prior to shipment. Units that do not meet specification thresholds are quarantined and not offered for sale.
