Fisher CL6821 Series: Comprehensive Module Range and Technical Overview

The Fisher CL6821 series is a family of analog input/output interface cards developed under the Emerson Fisher PROVOX Distributed Control System (DCS) platform. Deployed extensively across global heavy industry — including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power facilities, offshore platforms, and large-scale chemical processing plants — the CL6821 series occupies a critical position in legacy DCS infrastructure. These cards serve as the primary analog signal conditioning and termination interface between field instrumentation (transmitters, control valves, thermocouples) and the PROVOX process controller backplane. Installed base counts in the tens of thousands of units remain active worldwide, making long-term spare parts availability a primary operational concern for plant maintenance engineers and reliability teams.

The Evolution of CL6821 Architecture

The CL6821 series was introduced as part of the Fisher Controls PROVOX system architecture in the 1980s, designed to interface 4–20 mA analog field signals with the PROVOX Series 10 and Series 20 controller platforms. Early revisions (X1-A1 through X1-A3) used discrete analog multiplexer ICs and passive signal conditioning networks. Subsequent revisions (X1-A4, X1-A5) incorporated improved EMI filtering, enhanced isolation barriers rated to 500 V DC, and tighter calibration tolerances (±0.1% full scale). The 41B5222X422 assembly designation identifies the specific PCB revision and component population variant used in the X1-A5 build level.

Following Emerson's acquisition of Fisher Controls, the CL6821 platform was maintained under the Emerson Process Management portfolio but was not forward-ported to the DeltaV S-series architecture. Plants migrating from PROVOX to DeltaV must replace CL6821 cards with DeltaV I/O subsystem equivalents (e.g., MD Plus, CIOC, WIOC). For sites not yet migrating, the CL6821 series has entered a mature/end-of-life phase. Emerson has formally discontinued new manufacture; all procurement is now sourced through authorized repair depots and industrial spare parts distributors. Compatibility is limited to PROVOX Series 10/20 backplanes and is not interchangeable with later PROVOX or DeltaV hardware generations without engineering modification.

Quality Control for the CL6821 Range

The CL6821 card presents specific test challenges due to its multi-layer PCB construction, analog multiplexer topology, and backplane edge connector interface.
