The original IC693 designation covered the first-generation hardware; the IC694 prefix was introduced to denote enhanced-performance modules with expanded memory, faster scan times, and improved communications capability while maintaining physical and logical backward compatibility with IC693 baseplates and power supplies.
Key architectural milestones include the introduction of the CPU374 (IC693CPU374) with Ethernet TCP/IP onboard, the CMM321 communications coprocessor for multi-protocol serial networking, and the DSM314/DSM324 motion control modules for coordinated axis control. The platform's VME-derived backplane bus operates at 5 VDC logic levels, and all I/O modules communicate via the Series 90-30 I/O bus protocol — a factor that limits direct substitution with PACSystems RX3i (IC695) hardware without a bus interface unit.
