Schneider Electric Compact NSX Series Technical Notes

The Schneider Electric Compact NSX series is one of the most widely deployed low-voltage molded case circuit breaker (MCCB) platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical complexes, nuclear power auxiliary systems, offshore platforms, and large-scale refinery distribution boards, the NSX range covers rated currents from 16 A to 630 A in a standardized frame architecture. Its modular design — supporting fixed, withdrawable, and toggle configurations — has made it the reference standard for panel builders and EPC contractors operating under IEC 60947-2.

The series is segmented by frame size: NSX100 (up to 100 A), NSX160/250 (up to 250 A), NSX400/630 (up to 630 A). Each frame accommodates interchangeable trip units (TM-D thermomagnetic, Micrologic electronic), enabling a single mechanical body to serve diverse protection curves without chassis replacement. This architecture is critical for facilities managing long-term spare parts standardization.

The Evolution of Compact NSX Architecture

The Compact NSX platform succeeded the legacy Compact NS series (introduced in the 1990s), inheriting its IEC frame dimensions while introducing a redesigned trip unit interface and improved arc-chute geometry. The transition from NS to NSX was phased between 2005 and 2012, with NSX achieving full IEC 60947-2 Edition 3 compliance and UL 489 listing for North American variants.

Early NSX units shipped exclusively with TM-D thermomagnetic trip units (fixed thermal and magnetic thresholds). From approximately 2008, Schneider introduced the Micrologic electronic trip unit family (2.0, 5.0, 6.0, 7.0), enabling adjustable long-time, short-time, instantaneous, and ground-fault protection on the same frame. This created a compatibility split: older panel designs specifying TM-D units cannot directly substitute Micrologic variants without relay coordination review.

The NSX100 frame (the subject of NSX100N) covers breaking capacities of 25 kA (N-class), 36 kA (H-class), 50 kA (S-class), and 70 kA (L-class) at 415 V AC, allowing specifiers to select the appropriate interrupting rating for their fault-level study without changing the physical footprint. Withdrawable versions (NSX100NA, NSX100HA) introduced cradle-mounted isolation for MCC applications, a feature absent in the original NS100 generation.
