YOKOGAWA CP345 Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of CP345 Architecture

The CP345 series traces its lineage to YOKOGAWA's CENTUM CS platform introduced in the mid-1990s, which established the V-net optical bus as the backbone for high-speed, deterministic controller-to-controller communication. The transition to CENTUM CS 3000 in the early 2000s brought the CP345 into widespread deployment, introducing a 100 Mbps Ethernet-based control bus (Vnet/IP in later revisions) alongside the legacy coaxial V-net. The CP345 S1 operates on the ESB (Extended Station Bus) backplane, communicating with I/O modules via a proprietary high-speed serial bus at scan cycles as fast as 100 ms.

As CENTUM VP succeeded CS 3000 from approximately 2008 onward, YOKOGAWA maintained backward compatibility at the FCS level, allowing CP345-based stations to coexist within VP-managed domains under specific firmware and engineering tool constraints. The CP345 series entered its mature/end-of-active-production phase by the mid-2010s, with YOKOGAWA transitioning new projects to the CP461 and CP451 processor families. However, the CP345 remains in active service at thousands of installed sites globally, making long-term spare parts availability and lifecycle extension support a primary operational concern for plant maintenance engineers.

Quality Control for the CP345 Range

The CP345 processor and its associated I/O modules present specific technical challenges during quality verification due to the proprietary nature of the ESB backplane communication protocol and the V-net/Vnet-IP bus interface. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol for all CP345 series units:
