Technical Dossier
The YOKOGAWA FA-M3 programmable controller platform is one of the most widely deployed mid-to-large scale PLC architectures in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical complexes, nuclear auxiliary systems, LNG terminals, and continuous-process refineries, the FA-M3 series is recognized for its deterministic scan-cycle performance, high-density I/O backplane architecture, and long-term vendor support lifecycle. The F3CR04-ON is a CPU module within this platform, designed for applications requiring reliable ladder/function block execution with integrated communication capability.
The FA-M3 platform was introduced by YOKOGAWA in the mid-1990s as a successor to its earlier FA-500 and FA-700 controller families. The architecture is built around a proprietary high-speed backplane bus (F3BU-series base units) that supports hot-swap module replacement in select configurations. Early CPU generations (F3CP02, F3CP04) offered basic ladder logic execution with RS-232C communication. Subsequent generations introduced Ethernet-native CPUs (F3CP66-4S, F3CP67-4S), expanded memory maps, and IEC 61131-3 structured text support. The F3CR-series CPUs, including the F3CR04-ON, represent a mid-generation architecture with integrated coprocessor functions and enhanced instruction throughput. Compatibility across generations is maintained at the backplane level, allowing F3CR-series modules to operate within existing F3BU base units without chassis replacement — a critical factor for brownfield plant upgrades. As of 2024, YOKOGAWA has transitioned active development to the STARDOM and Unified Controller nx series, placing the FA-M3 platform in a sustained-support (maintenance) lifecycle phase.
