GE DS200 Series Technical Notes

The GE DS200 series is a family of printed circuit board assemblies developed by General Electric for use within the Mark V Turbine Control System — one of the most widely deployed distributed control architectures in heavy industrial environments globally. DS200 boards are installed across gas turbine power plants, combined-cycle facilities, petrochemical refineries, nuclear auxiliary systems, and offshore oil & gas platforms. The Mark V platform, introduced in the late 1980s and remaining in active service through the 2020s, established a long-term installed base that continues to require spare parts support. The DS200 series covers the full functional scope of the Mark V: processor boards, I/O interface boards, communication adapters, power conditioning modules, and specialty signal conditioning cards. Due to the age of the platform and GE's transition to the Mark VI and Mark VIe architectures, the majority of DS200 modules are now classified as obsolete or end-of-life by the OEM, making third-party sourcing and lifecycle extension services critical for plant operators.

The Evolution of DS200 Architecture

The DS200 series was engineered as the hardware layer of GE's Mark V Turbine Control System, which succeeded the Mark IV and introduced triple-redundant (TMR) control architecture for critical turbine protection. Early DS200 boards from the late 1980s and early 1990s used through-hole and mixed SMT construction on multi-layer FR4 substrates, with ISA-style backplane communication. Mid-generation revisions introduced improved ASIC integration and revised firmware ROMs to address field reliability issues. The series uses a proprietary backplane bus (the Mark V I/O Bus) that is not compatible with Mark VI or Mark VIe hardware without dedicated migration interface modules. Key compatibility constraints include: board revision suffixes (e.g., G1, G2, G3) that denote hardware revisions with differing firmware requirements; EEPROM configuration data that is turbine-unit-specific and must be preserved or re-programmed during replacement; and slot-specific addressing that ties board function to physical rack position. Plants operating Mark V systems beyond OEM support windows must maintain a curated spare parts inventory of DS200 boards to avoid unplanned outages, as cross-revision substitution is not always possible without engineering validation.

DS200 Full Catalog & Functionalities (SKU List)

The following SKUs represent verified, commonly stocked DS200 series modules. Each entry reflects the board's primary functional role within the Mark V control architecture.
