Solving the Discontinued Hardware Crisis

The GE Series 90-30 PLC platform was one of the most widely deployed mid-range controllers in North American and European manufacturing from the late 1980s through the 2000s. Thousands of facilities — automotive stamping plants, water treatment stations, packaging lines, HVAC control systems — still operate on this architecture. GE Fanuc's transition to the PACSystems RX3i platform effectively ended active development of the 90-30 series, and the HE693THM884N thermocouple input module has been out of production for years.

The HE693THM884N is not interchangeable with modules from other GE series without re-engineering the rack configuration and potentially rewriting ladder logic. This is not a situation where a generic substitute resolves the problem. The correct part number, in working condition, is the only viable short-term solution for most facilities.

Condition & Reliability Assurance

Discontinued modules sourced from secondary markets carry inherent risk. Electrolytic capacitor degradation, firmware version mismatches, and pin corrosion are the three most common failure modes in aged PLC hardware. Our 5-step QA process addresses each directly:

  • Step 1 – Visual and Physical Inspection: Full examination of the PCB, connector pins, and housing for corrosion, burn marks, or physical damage. Units with compromised connectors are rejected at this stage.
  • Step 2 – Electrolytic Capacitor Assessment: Capacitors are the primary aging component in analog input modules. We check for bulging, leakage, and ESR deviation. Modules with suspect capacitors are either recapped by certified technicians or removed from inventory.
  • Step 3 – Firmware Version Verification: The HE693THM884N must carry a firmware revision compatible with the target rack's CPU firmware. We verify and document the firmware version on every unit.
  • Step 4 – Functional Bench Test: Where test equipment is available, modules are powered and tested for correct channel response prior to shipment.
  • Step 5 – Packaging and ESD Protection: All modules are shipped in anti-static packaging with desiccant. Connector covers are fitted to prevent pin damage in transit.
