GE IC676 Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of IC676 Architecture

The IC676 series was introduced as part of GE Fanuc's VersaMax distributed I/O expansion in the late 1990s, designed to address the growing demand for IP67-rated field I/O that could be mounted directly on machinery without enclosures. Early revisions used a proprietary GE Genius Bus backplane protocol, limiting interoperability to GE-native controllers. Subsequent hardware revisions introduced Profibus-DP network adapters (IC676PBS001, IC676PBS002), enabling integration with Siemens S7 and other third-party PLCs — a significant architectural shift that broadened the platform's deployment scope.

The transition from Genius Bus to open fieldbus protocols (Profibus-DP, DeviceNet) represented the primary architectural evolution of the IC676 line. Later catalog additions introduced analog I/O blocks (IC676ALG series) alongside the original discrete I/O blocks, extending the platform's functional range. As of the mid-2010s, GE (subsequently acquired by Emerson under the Automation Solutions portfolio) transitioned active development to the VersaMax Nano and VersaMax Micro platforms, placing IC676 in a sustained-support lifecycle. Compatibility between IC676 field blocks and current VersaMax network adapters remains intact, allowing mixed-generation system operation during phased upgrades.

Quality Control for the IC676 Range

IC676 modules present specific test challenges due to their IP67-sealed enclosures, integrated M12 field wiring connectors, and bus-coupled backplane communication. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all IC676 units prior to dispatch:

  • Visual and mechanical inspection: Enclosure integrity check, M12 connector pin condition, sealing gasket assessment, and label legibility verification.
  • Power-on functional test: Each module is energized at rated 24VDC supply voltage. Status LED behavior is verified against GE Fanuc IC676 hardware reference documentation.
  • I/O point verification: For discrete input blocks (including IC676PBI008), all 8 or 16 input channels are individually stimulated and confirmed active via network adapter diagnostic readback. For output blocks, each output channel is loaded and current draw verified within specification.
  • Bus communication test: Network adapters (IC676PBS001, IC676PBS002, IC676GBA001) are connected to a live test network and confirmed to enumerate correctly, exchange I/O data, and report no fault codes.
  • Analog calibration check: Analog I/O blocks (IC676ALG series) are tested across the full 4–20mA and 0–10V input/output range using calibrated signal sources and measurement equipment. Linearity and offset errors are recorded.
  • Burn-in period: Selected units undergo a 24-hour powered burn-in cycle to screen for latent component failures prior to shipment.
