GE IS220P Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of IS220P Architecture

The IS220P series was introduced alongside the Mark VIe platform in the early 2000s as a successor to the IS200-series modules used in Mark VI systems. Key architectural milestones include:

Mark V (IS2xx legacy): Serial-bus I/O, non-redundant backplane, limited diagnostics. Modules such as IS200BICLH1A and IS200TREGH1B defined this era.

Mark VI (IS200P transition): Introduced the IONET Ethernet backbone concept in a hybrid form. IS200-series modules remained dominant but lacked the full triple-redundancy of the successor.

Mark VIe (IS220P generation): Full triple-redundant IONet (R, S, T networks), 100 Mbps Ethernet I/O bus, IEC 61131-3 compliant logic execution, and modular hot-swap capability. The IS220P series was purpose-built for this architecture.

Mark VIeS / Mark VIeR (current evolution): GE introduced safety-rated (SIL 2/3) variants and redundant controller modules. Some IS220P modules are compatible with these platforms; others require IS230P or IS410 series replacements. Plant engineers upgrading from Mark VIe to Mark VIeS must audit IS220P module compatibility on a per-model basis, as backplane pinouts and firmware handshake protocols differ.

IS220P Full Catalog & Functionalities (SKU List)

The following SKUs represent the core IS220P module range, organized by functional category. Each model is a verified member of the GE Mark VIe IS220P family.

Discrete Output Modules

IS220PDOAH1B: 24 VDC discrete output module, 24-channel, Mark VIe rack-mount, IONet-compatible.
IS220PDOAH1A: Earlier revision of PDOAH1B; functionally equivalent, firmware version differences apply.
IS220PDOAS1A: Discrete output module, simplex configuration, reduced channel density variant.

Discrete Input Modules

IS220PDIEH1A: 24 VDC discrete input module, 24-channel, Mark VIe, supports contact and voltage inputs.
IS220PDIAH1A: Discrete input module, high-density configuration, 48-channel equivalent grouping.
IS220PDIAS1A: Simplex discrete input, used in non-redundant I/O configurations.

Analog Input Modules

IS220PAIAH1A: Analog input module, 16-channel, 4–20 mA / 0–10 V, Mark VIe IONet.
IS220PAICH1A: Analog input, thermocouple/RTD capable, 16-channel, cold junction compensation integrated.
IS220PAICH1B: Revised thermocouple/RTD analog input; improved noise rejection over H1A revision.
IS220PAIOH1A: Analog input/output combination module, 8 AI + 4 AO channels.

Analog Output Modules

IS220PAOAH1A: Analog output module, 8-channel, 4–20 mA, Mark VIe rack-mount.
IS220PAOAH1B: Revised analog output; enhanced loop diagnostics and HART pass-through support.

Communication & Interface Modules

IS220PPROH1A: Profibus DP master communication module for Mark VIe, supports up to 125 slave nodes.
IS220PTCCH1A: Thermocouple input module, 16-channel, dedicated cold-junction compensation per channel.
IS220PVIBH1A: Vibration monitoring input module, 4-channel, compatible with proximity probes and accelerometers.

Power & Specialty Modules

IS220PPWRH1A: Distributed I/O power supply module for IS220P rack, 24 VDC regulated output.
IS220PTURH1A: Turbine-specific I/O module, integrates speed, temperature, and valve position inputs in a single slot.

Quality Control for the IS220P Range

IS220P modules incorporate a multi-layer backplane bus interface and IONet Ethernet transceiver that require functional validation beyond basic power-on testing. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all IS220P units prior to dispatch:

Backplane continuity test: All J1/J2 connector pins verified against GE IS220P mechanical drawings for open circuits and shorts.
IONet communication test: Module inserted into a live Mark VIe test rack; IONet R/S/T network registration confirmed via ToolboxST diagnostic interface.
Channel-level functional test: For discrete output modules (e.g., IS220PDOAH1B), all 24 output channels are individually energized and verified at rated 24 VDC load. For analog modules, output accuracy is verified against a calibrated reference meter (±0.1% FS).
Thermal soak: Units operated at 45°C ambient for 4 hours to screen latent component failures.
Firmware version logging: FPGA and application firmware versions recorded and included with shipment documentation.

Modules that fail any stage of this protocol are quarantined, documented, and not offered for sale.
