Technical Dossier
The IS220 series was introduced as part of the Mark VIe platform launch in the early 2000s, succeeding the Mark VI (IS200 series) and Mark V (DS200 series) platforms. Key architectural milestones include:
Mark V (DS200 series, 1990s): VME-bus architecture, proprietary IONET/ARCNET communication. Limited I/O density. Now fully obsolete; no OEM support.
Mark VI (IS200 series, late 1990s–2000s): Introduced IONet Ethernet backbone. Modular I/O with separate terminal boards. Many sites still operational; OEM support discontinued for most variants.
Mark VIe (IS220 series, 2003–present): Ethernet-based IONet with IEC 61850 compatibility. Distributed I/O architecture. Supports simplex and TMR configurations. Backward-compatible terminal boards with IS200 series in many applications. Active platform with ongoing firmware updates through GE Vernova.
Mark VIeS (Safety variant): SIL 2/3 certified subset of IS220 modules for safety instrumented systems. Requires dedicated engineering and validation.
Compatibility note: IS220 modules communicate via the IONet protocol over standard Ethernet hardware. Mixing IS220 with IS200 modules requires careful IONet segment planning and is not universally supported. Firmware version alignment between the controller (VCMI/VCRC) and I/O modules is mandatory to avoid communication faults.
Controllers & Processor Modules
IS220PPDAH1A: Mark VIe PPDA processor/power distribution module; primary controller board for simplex and TMR racks, integrates IONet communication and local I/O bus arbitration.
IS220PSCAH1A: Power supply and controller assembly; provides regulated DC power to IS220 I/O rack with integrated controller functions for distributed Mark VIe nodes.
IS220VCMIH2C: Mark VIe controller module (VCMI); primary CPU for turbine control logic execution, hosts application software and manages IONet communication to all I/O modules.
IS220VCRCH1B: Redundant controller module (VCRC); used in TMR configurations as the voting and redundancy management processor alongside VCMI.
Analog Input Modules
IS220PAICH1B: 16-channel analog input module; accepts 4–20 mA and 0–10 V signals from field transmitters; used for process variable monitoring (pressure, temperature, flow).
IS220PTCCH1C: Thermocouple input module; supports J, K, T, E, R, S, B type thermocouples; 12-channel differential input with cold junction compensation.
IS220PRTDH1A: RTD input module; supports Pt100/Pt1000 and Ni120 resistance temperature detectors; 8-channel, 3-wire or 4-wire configuration.
Analog Output Modules
IS220PAOAH1A: 8-channel analog output module; 4–20 mA current output for valve positioners, actuators, and speed reference signals.
Digital Input Modules
IS220PDIAH1A: 24-channel digital input module; 24 VDC discrete inputs for limit switches, proximity sensors, and contact status monitoring.
IS220PDIBH1B: High-density digital input module; 48-channel 24 VDC discrete inputs; used in applications requiring dense contact monitoring such as generator protection panels.
IS220PDIOH1A: Digital I/O combination module; mixed discrete input/output channels for compact panel designs.
Digital Output Modules
IS220PDOAH1A: 24-channel digital output module; 24 VDC sourcing outputs for solenoid valves, relays, and indicator lamps.
IS220PDOCH1C: Contact output module; dry-contact relay outputs rated for 120/240 VAC or 24 VDC; used for trip relay and alarm annunciator circuits.
Communication & Network Modules
IS220PCOMH1B: Serial communication module; supports RS-232/RS-485 Modbus RTU for legacy device integration (vibration monitors, excitation systems, third-party PLCs).
IS220PENET1B: Ethernet communication adapter; provides additional Ethernet ports for plant DCS integration via OPC-DA/UA or Modbus TCP.
Power Supply Modules
IS220PPWRH1A: Rack power supply module; 24 VDC regulated output for IS220 I/O rack; supports hot-swap replacement in redundant power configurations.
IS220PPWRH2A: Enhanced power supply module; higher current capacity variant for fully populated IS220 racks with dense I/O loading.
While GE Vernova continues to support the Mark VIe platform, specific IS220 module variants—particularly first-generation hardware revisions (suffix A and B)—are no longer manufactured and have been superseded by revised hardware (suffix C and D). Sites running original Mark VIe installations from 2003–2010 frequently require these early-revision modules for like-for-like replacement to avoid firmware compatibility issues with adjacent modules.
IS220 modules incorporate complex multi-layer PCBs with high-density FPGA, DSP, and ASIC components. Standard visual inspection and power-on testing are insufficient for this module family. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol:
Backplane bus integrity test: Each module is seated in a live IS220-compatible test rack and IONet communication is verified at the protocol level. Modules that fail to enumerate on IONet are rejected regardless of visual condition.
Channel-level functional test: For analog I/O modules, each channel is individually stimulated and the output verified against calibration tolerance (±0.1% full scale). For digital I/O modules, each channel is exercised through a full on/off cycle under rated load.
Firmware version verification: Module firmware is read and documented. Modules with firmware versions known to have field defects (per GE Service Bulletins) are either updated or flagged for customer decision.
Thermal soak: Modules are operated at 50°C for a minimum of 4 hours to screen for latent component failures before dispatch review.
ESD and packaging: All IS220 modules are shipped in anti-static bags with foam-lined boxes. Revision suffix and test date are labeled on each unit.
