GE Mark VIe IS220P Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of IS220P Architecture

The Mark VIe platform succeeded the Mark VI (IS200 series) and Mark V systems, introduced by GE Power in the early 2000s as a fully digital, networked turbine control architecture. The IS220P series was developed as the second-generation I/O module family for Mark VIe, replacing earlier IS200P-prefix modules with enhanced diagnostics, improved EMI tolerance, and support for triple-redundant (TMR) control configurations. The IS220P modules communicate via the IONet protocol over standard 100BASE-TX Ethernet, a departure from the proprietary backplane buses used in Mark V and earlier Mark VI hardware. This architectural shift introduced compatibility constraints: IS220P modules are not backward-compatible with Mark V racks, and integration with Mark VI requires specific gateway configurations. As of 2020, GE (now part of GE Vernova) has transitioned active development to the Mark VIeS and Mark VIe for renewables platforms, placing the IS220P series in a mature/sustained-support lifecycle phase. Long-term maintenance customers represent the primary demand driver for IS220P inventory.

  • IS220PPWRH1A: Power supply module; 24 VDC regulated output for IS220P I/O pack rail power distribution.

Quality Control for the IS220P Range

IS220P modules present specific test challenges due to their IONet Ethernet communication dependency and multi-channel analog calibration requirements. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all IS220P units prior to dispatch: (1) Visual inspection for backplane connector pin damage, capacitor swelling, and conformal coating integrity. (2) Power-on functional test using a Mark VIe-compatible I/O pack test bench, verifying IONet link establishment and module self-diagnostic pass status. (3) Channel-level verification for analog input modules: each channel is stimulated with calibrated 4–20 mA and thermocouple signals, with output values compared against factory calibration tolerances. (4) Digital I/O modules are cycled through all 32 or 64 channels under load to verify output driver integrity and input threshold accuracy. (5) Turbine I/O modules (including IS220PTURH1A) undergo speed signal simulation using a pulse generator to verify frequency counting accuracy across the 0–20,000 RPM measurement range. (6) Final burn-in at operating temperature for a minimum of 4 hours before packaging.
