The Evolution of Mark VIe Architecture

GE's turbine control lineage progressed through several distinct generations: the relay-based systems of the 1960s gave way to the Mark I through Mark IV digital platforms through the 1970s–1990s. The Mark V (introduced early 1990s) established the distributed I/O concept that persists today. The Mark VI followed with enhanced diagnostics and redundancy options. The Mark VIe, introduced in the mid-2000s, represented a fundamental architectural shift — moving to an Ethernet-based IONet backbone (replacing the earlier serial IONET), adopting the VCMI (VME Controller Module Interface) architecture, and introducing the I/O Pack form factor as a field-mountable, self-contained signal conditioning unit.
