The VCMI module family was introduced alongside the Mark VI control system in the mid-1990s as GE transitioned away from the Mark V's proprietary ARCNET-only topology toward a hybrid VME-bus architecture capable of supporting both legacy serial protocols and emerging Ethernet-based IONet.
