The Evolution of F-Series Architecture

HIMA's F-Series architecture has evolved through three distinct generations since the early 1990s. The first generation introduced discrete, rack-mounted safety I/O modules with proprietary backplane communication, establishing the foundational SIL 3 voting logic that remains a design reference today. The second generation, introduced with the HIMatrix platform, transitioned to a distributed, node-based architecture eliminating the central rack in favor of compact, DIN-rail-mounted controllers with integrated I/O — a significant shift that reduced wiring complexity in brownfield retrofits. The third generation, represented by the HIMax platform, reintroduced a scalable rack architecture with hot-swap capability, high-channel-density I/O modules, and Ethernet-based SafeEthernet communication, enabling large-scale SIS deployments with thousands of I/O points on a single backplane. Compatibility between generations is not native; migration projects require HIMA-certified engineering tools (SILworX) and hardware adapters.
