Technical Dossier
The HIMA Z-Series represents HIMA Paul Hildebrandt GmbH's core safety instrumented system (SIS) hardware platform, deployed across critical process industries including petrochemical refineries, offshore oil & gas platforms, nuclear power generation facilities, and large-scale chemical plants. Certified to IEC 61508 SIL 3 and IEC 61511, Z-Series modules form the backbone of safety-critical control architectures where failure is not an option. Installations span global heavy industry: from LNG terminals in Qatar and South Korea to ethylene crackers in Germany and the United States. The Z-Series is the predecessor and parallel platform to HIMA's HIMatrix and HIMax product lines, and remains in active service across tens of thousands of safety loops worldwide. Its modular rack-based architecture, redundant backplane communication, and deterministic scan cycle make it the reference standard for legacy SIS infrastructure.
HIMA introduced the Z-Series platform in the 1990s as a successor to its earlier relay-based and first-generation programmable safety systems. The architecture is built around a VME-compatible rack structure with a proprietary safety backplane bus, enabling hot-standby redundancy at the CPU and I/O level. Early Z-Series deployments used the Z6000 CPU family with parallel I/O scanning; subsequent revisions introduced the Z7116 and Z7117 processor modules with enhanced diagnostic coverage and faster cycle times. The Z1000-series I/O modules standardized 24 VDC digital input/output interfaces across the platform. Communication evolved from proprietary HIMA bus protocols to support PROFIBUS-DP, Modbus RTU/TCP, and OPC DA/UA gateways via dedicated communication modules. Compatibility between sub-generations is constrained by backplane revision and firmware version — Z6xxx CPUs are not interchangeable with Z7xxx CPUs without rack and firmware migration. As of 2020, HIMA has formally classified the Z-Series as a mature/end-of-life product line, with no new hardware development planned. Replacement migration paths lead to the HIMax and HIMatrix X-Series platforms. However, given the 20–30 year operational lifecycle typical of SIS installations, Z-Series spare parts demand remains structurally high through at least 2035.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly sourced Z-Series modules. Each entry reflects the module's primary functional role within the safety system architecture.
