Honeywell TDC 3000 Series Technical Notes

The Honeywell TDC 3000 (Total Distributed Control) platform is one of the most widely deployed Distributed Control Systems in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical refineries, nuclear power facilities, offshore platforms, pulp and paper mills, and large-scale chemical processing plants, the TDC 3000 architecture has maintained a dominant installed base since its commercial introduction in the late 1970s. Its modular backplane design, deterministic scan cycle, and redundancy options made it the reference standard for continuous process control for over three decades. The 10311/2/1 is a representative I/O and control module within this ecosystem, designed for integration into TDC 3000 cabinets operating on the Local Control Network (LCN) and Universal Control Network (UCN).

The Evolution of TDC 3000 Architecture

The TDC 3000 platform evolved through several distinct architectural generations. The original TDC 2000 (1975) established the distributed control concept; TDC 3000 (1983) introduced the Local Control Network (LCN) at 5 Mbps, enabling peer-to-peer communication between nodes without a central arbiter. The Universal Control Network (UCN, introduced ~1988) extended the architecture to field-level controllers at 5 Mbps coaxial, supporting High-Performance Process Manager (HPPM) and Advanced Process Manager (APM) nodes. The Plant Network (PN) and later Ethernet-based gateways bridged TDC 3000 to modern SCADA and historian systems. Compatibility constraints are significant: LCN modules are not interchangeable with UCN modules; card file generations (standard vs. enhanced) impose firmware and backplane dependencies. Plants migrating to Experion PKS must account for these boundaries when planning phased replacements. Modules such as the 10311/2/1 are associated with the I/O subsystem layer and must be matched to the correct card file revision and power supply rating.
