Honeywell UV Flame Sensor Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of Honeywell UV Flame Sensor Architecture

Honeywell's ultraviolet flame detection product line traces its commercial origin to the mid-20th century, when the company introduced the first self-checking UV scanner designs for industrial burner management. Early-generation sensors such as the C7027A and C7035A established the foundational UV tube-based detection architecture, using a gas-filled ultraviolet-sensitive tube that conducts current only when exposed to UV radiation in the 185–260 nm band. These sensors were paired with primary controls such as the R4140 and R7140 series.

The transition to solid-state amplifier modules in the 1980s and 1990s — represented by the RM7800 and R7847 relay module families — required corresponding updates to scanner electrical interface specifications. The C7076A and C7076C introduced self-checking UV scanner capability, where the sensor periodically interrupts its own signal path to verify that the downstream amplifier can detect a loss-of-flame condition. This self-check architecture became mandatory under IEC 61511 SIL 2 requirements for safety instrumented systems.

The 113228/U represents the current-generation replacement part for UV scanner assemblies in this lineage, providing direct compatibility with the R7847, R7848, R7849, and R7861 amplifier modules used in RM7800L, RM7840L, and RM7890 relay module configurations. As the broader RM7800 platform has entered its mature/end-of-active-production phase, sourcing of replacement UV scanner components including the 113228/U has shifted increasingly to authorized aftermarket and MRO (Maintenance, Repair & Operations) channels. Long-term maintenance support for installed RM7800-based BMS systems depends on reliable access to these scanner assemblies.

Sourcing Hard-to-Find & Obsolete Honeywell UV Flame Sensor Parts

The Honeywell RM7800 platform and its associated UV scanner assemblies — including the 113228/U, C7027A, C7035A, and C7076 series — are in the mature-to-end-of-active-production phase of their product lifecycle. Honeywell has progressively transitioned new BMS installations toward the Safety Manager and Experion Safety platforms, while the installed base of RM7800-based systems in refineries, chemical plants, and power stations continues to require ongoing spare parts support for periods of 10–25 years post-installation.

Quality Control for the Honeywell UV Flame Sensor Range

UV flame sensor assemblies present specific test challenges due to their UV-tube degradation characteristics, self-check circuit integrity requirements, and sensitivity calibration dependencies. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all Honeywell UV scanner units prior to dispatch:
