Technical Dossier
The Honeywell C300 Controller is the primary processing node of the Experion PKS (Process Knowledge System) distributed control system. Deployed across refineries, petrochemical complexes, nuclear power facilities, and large-scale chemical plants globally, the C300 platform represents Honeywell's current-generation DCS architecture. It replaced the legacy C200 and C200E controllers and operates on the FTE (Fault Tolerant Ethernet) backbone, providing deterministic control execution with redundancy options across all I/O subsystems. The C300 is the dominant controller in Honeywell's installed base for continuous process industries, with tens of thousands of nodes in active service worldwide.
Honeywell's DCS controller lineage progressed from the TDC 3000 platform (LCN/UCN bus architecture, 1980s–1990s) through the PlantScape and Experion R100–R200 generations, which introduced the C200 controller on a PCDI backplane. The C300 was introduced with Experion R300 (circa 2005) and brought a fundamental shift: native FTE dual-ring Ethernet as the primary I/O bus, replacing the proprietary PCDI/CEE bus of the C200 era. This change enabled higher I/O density, longer cable runs, and integration with HART, FOUNDATION Fieldbus, and PROFIBUS DP field devices through dedicated linking devices.
The C300 uses the Series C I/O subsystem (CIOM-A backplane, 8-slot and 12-slot configurations) and communicates with I/O Link Interface Modules (ILIMs) over FTE. Redundant C300 pairs operate in hot-standby mode with bumpless transfer. Firmware revisions from R300 through R511 and beyond have progressively expanded the module count per controller, loop execution rates (down to 50 ms for fast loops), and security hardening per IEC 62443. Compatibility between C300 hardware revisions and specific Experion R-releases must be verified against Honeywell's compatibility matrix, as mixing hardware generations without firmware alignment can cause I/O communication faults.
The following SKUs represent verified, commonly stocked components within the Honeywell C300 / Experion PKS Series C I/O ecosystem. Each entry reflects a discrete hardware part number with a defined functional role.

Series C I/O Modules (8C- Prefix — CIOM-A Backplane)
C300 Series C I/O modules present specific test challenges due to their FTE-based communication architecture and backplane bus design. DriveKNMS applies the following verification protocol to all C300 inventory:
