Honeywell C7035 Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of C7035 Architecture

The C7035 series traces its lineage to Honeywell's mid-20th century UV scanner program, originally developed for industrial combustion control in the 1960s–1970s under the Protectorelay and Minipeeper product families. The C7035 designation standardized the UV tube-based sensor form factor for DIN-rail and direct-mount BMS integration. Key architectural milestones include:

First Generation (C7035A): Geiger-Müller UV tube detector, 120 VAC or 24 VAC supply compatibility, 1/2-inch NPT conduit entry, designed for single-burner applications. Viewing angle: 70° cone. Response time: <1 second to flame-on signal.

Revised Variants (C7035A1023 / C7035A1064): Functionally equivalent UV tube sensors differentiated by regional certification packages and cable/connector configurations. C7035A1023 is the standard North American market variant; C7035A1064 carries additional CE marking for European BMS installations. Both are direct drop-in replacements for each other in most field applications.

Compatibility Considerations: The C7035 series is backward-compatible with all R4343, R7847, R7848, RM7800L, RM7800M, RM7840L, and RM7890 amplifier/relay modules. It is not compatible with solid-state UV/IR dual-band detectors (e.g., C7927, C7961 series) without amplifier substitution. As of 2020, Honeywell has transitioned primary BMS development to the Slate™ platform; however, C7035 remains in active production for legacy system maintenance.

Quality Control for the C7035 Range

The C7035 UV flame sensor presents specific quality verification challenges due to its UV tube detector element, which degrades with accumulated operating hours and UV exposure cycles. DriveKNMS applies the following test protocol to all C7035 units prior to shipment:

UV Tube Continuity & Sensitivity Test: Each unit is exposed to a calibrated UV source (185–260 nm band) at defined intensity levels. Output signal response time and signal amplitude are measured against Honeywell's published sensitivity specifications. Units failing to produce a flame-on signal within 1 second at rated UV intensity are rejected.

Dark Current Verification: With UV source removed, the sensor output is monitored for false-flame signals. Any unit producing a spurious output under dark conditions is rejected — this is the primary failure mode of aged UV tubes.

Supply Voltage & Power Consumption Check: Input voltage is applied at nominal and ±10% tolerance limits. Current draw is measured and compared against specification. Overvoltage or undervoltage sensitivity is flagged.

Mechanical & Connector Inspection: NPT thread condition, housing integrity, lens/window cleanliness, and cable/connector condition are inspected visually and dimensionally. Units with cracked housings, damaged threads, or degraded cable insulation are rejected regardless of electrical performance.

Certification Label Verification: For ATEX, FM, CSA, and CE variants, certification markings are verified against the applicable standard revision. Units with illegible or non-conforming labels are quarantined pending documentation review.
