The Honeywell C300 Controller Series is a core component of the Experion PKS (Process Knowledge System) distributed control system platform, deployed across global heavy industry including petrochemical refineries, nuclear power stations, LNG terminals, pulp and paper mills, and pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities. The C300 architecture succeeded the legacy TDC 3000 and PlantScape platforms and remains one of the most widely installed DCS controller families in continuous process industries. Its modular backplane design, redundancy support, and FOUNDATION Fieldbus / HART integration make it a reference standard for process automation engineers worldwide. The Evolution of C300 Architecture

The C300 series was introduced by Honeywell as part of the Experion PKS R100 release in the early 2000s, succeeding the TDC 3000 LCN/UCN architecture and the PlantScape platform. Early C300 deployments used the Series C I/O subsystem with CIOM-A backplanes and CC-IP01 / CC-IP02 interface modules for I/O link communication. A critical compatibility boundary exists between Series C and Series D I/O: Series C modules (CC- prefix) are not interchangeable with Series D modules (MC- prefix) without backplane and firmware upgrades. Sites running Experion PKS R210 or earlier must validate firmware compatibility before substituting any module. The C300 controller communicates over the FTE (Fault Tolerant Ethernet) backbone, which requires specific switch configurations (Cisco IE series recommended by Honeywell). As of Experion PKS R511 and later, the C300 platform entered a mature/sustaining lifecycle phase, with Honeywell directing new projects toward the C300E (Enhanced) variant. Long-term maintenance support for legacy C300 hardware remains available through third-party MRO suppliers such as DriveKNMS.
