Technical Dossier
The ICS Triplex Trusted series represents one of the most widely deployed Safety Instrumented System (SIS) platforms in global heavy industry. Installed across petrochemical complexes, nuclear power stations, offshore platforms, LNG terminals, and refinery process units, the Trusted architecture is certified to IEC 61508 SIL 3 and operates as a Triple Modular Redundant (TMR) fault-tolerant control system. Its modular backplane design allows hot-swap replacement of I/O, communication, and controller modules without process shutdown — a critical requirement in continuous-operation facilities. The platform remains active in thousands of legacy installations worldwide, making spare parts availability and lifecycle support a primary operational concern for asset owners.
ICS Triplex introduced the Trusted platform in the early 1990s as a dedicated TMR safety controller, predating the widespread adoption of IEC 61508. The original architecture used proprietary backplane communication and dedicated voter logic hardware. Through successive generations, the platform evolved to incorporate standard fieldbus interfaces (HART, Modbus, Profibus), expanded I/O density, and improved diagnostics coverage. Honeywell acquired ICS Triplex in 2004, continuing the Trusted product line under the Honeywell Safety Systems brand. Post-acquisition modules maintained backward compatibility with legacy chassis and backplanes, allowing incremental upgrades without full system replacement. As of the mid-2010s, the Trusted series entered a mature/end-of-active-development phase. Honeywell has transitioned new SIS projects to the Safety Manager SC platform, but Trusted systems remain in service under long-term maintenance agreements. Spare parts, repair, and lifecycle extension support are now the dominant commercial activity around this platform.

With the Trusted platform in its lifecycle maintenance phase, OEM production of many modules has been discontinued or placed on extended lead times. DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of Trusted series spare parts sourced through authorized secondary market channels, decommissioned system buybacks, and verified surplus stock. For operators managing Trusted installations under long-term service agreements, DriveKNMS provides: verified surplus stock of discontinued modules including T8153C, T8110B, T8422, and T8800 variants; functional testing against original ICS Triplex specifications prior to shipment; documentation packages including revision history and compatibility matrices; and emergency dispatch capability for unplanned shutdowns. All sourced units are traceable to original manufacturing records where available.
The Trusted platform's TMR architecture introduces specific testing requirements that differ from standard PLC module verification. Each module processed by DriveKNMS undergoes the following protocol: backplane connector inspection for pin integrity and corrosion on the triple-redundant bus interface; power rail isolation testing to verify no cross-channel leakage between the three redundant logic lanes; functional I/O verification using channel-by-channel signal injection at rated voltage and current; communication adapter testing (applicable to T8153C and similar interface modules) including expander bus handshake verification and data integrity checks under simulated load; and final burn-in cycle to screen for latent component failures before shipment. Modules that fail any stage are quarantined and not returned to inventory.
