Technical Dossier
The ICS Triplex Trusted Series is a fault-tolerant, triple modular redundancy (TMR) safety system platform deployed across the global heavy process industries — including offshore oil & gas platforms, onshore refineries, petrochemical complexes, nuclear power generation facilities, and LNG terminals. Engineered to IEC 61508 SIL 3 requirements, the Trusted architecture provides continuous self-diagnostics, voted I/O processing, and bumpless transfer between redundant channels. Its installed base spans hundreds of Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) and Emergency Shutdown Systems (ESD) worldwide, many of which have been in continuous operation for over two decades. The T8403C Trusted Expander Module is a core backplane expansion component within this architecture, enabling chassis-to-chassis communication and I/O expansion without compromising the system's TMR integrity.
The Trusted platform was originally developed by Triconex (later acquired by ICS Triplex, then integrated into Rockwell Automation's safety portfolio) as a dedicated TMR safety controller. Early generations — the T3000 and T4000 chassis families — established the foundational voted-logic architecture. The T8000 series represented a significant architectural leap, introducing a high-speed Trusted Communication Link (TCL) backplane bus, modular I/O expansion via expander chassis, and compatibility with the Trusted Engineering Workstation (TEW) software environment.
The T8403C Expander Module belongs to the mature T8000 generation, which remains the dominant installed base in brownfield SIS applications. Compatibility between T8000-generation modules is generally maintained within the same chassis family, but cross-generation substitution (e.g., T3000 to T8000) requires full engineering review. As the T8000 series has entered its end-of-life phase with the OEM, long-term maintenance now depends on specialist distributors capable of sourcing, testing, and certifying surplus and refurbished units.

ICS Triplex has formally discontinued active manufacturing of the T8000 Trusted Series. OEM spare parts availability through standard distribution channels is severely limited. For operators of existing Trusted-based SIS installations — particularly those under long-term service agreements or subject to functional safety management plans — sourcing certified surplus inventory is the primary lifecycle extension strategy.
DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory of Trusted Series modules including the T8403C, T8110C, T8420, T8431, and T8440 families. All units are sourced from decommissioned systems or controlled surplus channels, inspected for physical integrity, and subjected to functional verification prior to dispatch. We support emergency breakdown orders, planned maintenance shutdowns, and long-term frame agreements for asset-intensive operators.
The Trusted Series architecture presents specific test challenges due to its TMR voted-logic design. A module that passes basic power-on self-test may still exhibit faults in its voting circuitry or inter-channel communication paths that only manifest under loaded conditions. DriveKNMS applies a structured verification protocol for all Trusted Series modules:
All tested units are issued a DriveKNMS inspection certificate with test date, technician ID, and firmware version recorded.
