ICS Triplex T9300 Series Technical Notes

The Evolution of T9300 Architecture

The ICS Triplex Trusted platform was developed in the United Kingdom and introduced TMR logic solving to process safety applications in the late 1980s. The T9300 series represents the second-generation I/O infrastructure, succeeding the earlier T8000 chassis family. Key architectural milestones include the transition from parallel backplane communication to a high-speed serial Trusted bus, the introduction of hot-standby power redundancy, and the integration of HART pass-through capability on analog I/O modules.

T9300 Full Catalog & Functionalities (SKU List)

The following SKUs represent verified, commonly deployed modules within the ICS Triplex Trusted T9300 series.

I/O Base Units & Chassis Infrastructure

  • T9300: I/O Base Unit — TMR backplane chassis for mounting Trusted I/O modules; provides redundant power and bus routing.
  • T9301: I/O Base Unit Extension — extends T9300 chassis capacity for high-density I/O configurations.
  • T9310: Termination Assembly — field wiring termination panel for T9300 base unit; supports marshalled cable connections.

Digital Input (DI) Modules

  • T9401: 24 VDC Digital Input Module — 16-channel TMR DI; rated for 24 VDC field devices, with per-channel diagnostics.
  • T9402: 120 VAC Digital Input Module — 16-channel TMR DI for 120 VAC field signals; used in legacy relay-interfaced installations.
  • T9403: 24 VDC Digital Input Module (High Density) — 32-channel TMR DI; optimized for high point-count safety loops.

Digital Output (DO) Modules

  • T9431: 24 VDC Digital Output Module — 8-channel TMR DO; solid-state output with short-circuit protection and diagnostics.
  • T9432: Relay Output Module — 8-channel TMR relay DO; used for final element actuation in de-energize-to-trip architectures.

Analog Input (AI) Modules

  • T9451: 4-20 mA Analog Input Module — 8-channel TMR AI; supports HART protocol pass-through for smart transmitter diagnostics.
  • T9452: RTD/Thermocouple Input Module — 8-channel TMR temperature input; supports PT100, PT1000, and Type K/J/T thermocouple inputs.
  • T9453: Analog Input Module (Voltage) — 8-channel TMR AI for 0-10 VDC and +/-10 VDC field signals.

Analog Output (AO) Modules

  • T9461: 4-20 mA Analog Output Module — 4-channel TMR AO; used for valve positioner and speed controller interfaces.

Communication & CPU Modules

  • T9110: Trusted Communication Interface (TCI) — primary inter-chassis communication adapter; supports Trusted proprietary network protocol.
  • T9120: Modbus RTU Communication Module — serial Modbus RTU gateway for DCS historian and HMI integration.
  • T9130: Ethernet Communication Module — 10/100 Mbps Ethernet adapter for OPC-DA/OPC-UA connectivity to supervisory systems.

Power Supply Modules

  • T9800: Redundant Power Supply Module — dual-redundant 24 VDC power input; hot-swappable without chassis de-energization.
  • T9810: Power Distribution Module — distributes conditioned power across T9300 backplane rails; includes over-voltage and under-voltage trip.

Quality Control for the T9300 Range

The T9300 series presents specific quality control challenges due to its TMR backplane architecture and high-speed serial bus communication. DriveKNMS applies a structured test protocol to all T9300 modules prior to dispatch:

  • Backplane Bus Integrity Test: Each module is seated in a live T9300 chassis and subjected to full TMR bus communication verification across all three redundant channels. Modules that fail to achieve synchronous three-channel agreement are rejected.
  • I/O Channel Functional Test: All input and output channels are exercised at rated signal levels. For analog modules, linearity and offset error are measured against factory calibration tolerances (typically +/-0.1% of full scale).
  • HART Communication Verification: For AI modules with HART capability (e.g., T9451), HART pass-through is verified using a calibrated HART communicator at 1200 baud.
  • Power Supply Load Test: Power modules (T9800, T9810) are tested under full rated load for a minimum of 2 hours with thermal monitoring to detect latent component degradation.
  • Firmware Version Audit: Module firmware is read and recorded. Customers are advised of any firmware version constraints relative to their installed Trusted system version.
