Technical Dossier
The INTORQ BFK458 is a globally deployed series of electromagnetic spring-applied brakes, engineered for fail-safe operation in heavy industrial environments. Manufactured in Germany by INTORQ GmbH & Co. KG (a Kendrion company), the BFK458 series is the de facto standard for holding and stopping brakes in servo drive systems, hoisting equipment, conveyor lines, and precision machine tools. Installed base spans chemical processing plants, offshore platforms, nuclear facility auxiliary systems, steel rolling mills, and automated warehousing. The series covers torque ratings from 1.5 Nm to 600 Nm, accommodating motor frame sizes IEC 63 through IEC 315. Voltage variants include 24 VDC, 103 VDC, 180 VDC, and 205 VDC, enabling direct integration with standard servo drive DC bus supplies without auxiliary rectifiers.
The BFK458 series entered production in the early 1990s as a successor to the INTORQ BFK457 range, introducing a modular flange design that standardized mounting across IEC motor frames. The first-generation BFK458 units used a single-coil electromagnetic circuit with manual release lever as standard. By the mid-2000s, INTORQ introduced the BFK458/E sub-series with enhanced enclosure ratings (IP54/IP65) and improved coil insulation class (Class F, later Class H) to address thermal demands in continuous-duty servo applications.
The BFK458 architecture is built around a stationary electromagnet housing, a rotor disc with friction linings, and an armature plate retained by compression springs. On power loss, springs engage the armature against the rotor, generating braking torque. Energizing the coil releases the armature, allowing free rotation. This fail-safe principle is mandatory in hoisting and vertical-axis applications under EN 13135 and EN 14492.
Compatibility considerations: BFK458 units are mechanically interchangeable within the same size designation (e.g., size 12 = 120 mm OD) but coil voltage and torque rating must be matched to the drive system. Older 103 VDC variants are directly compatible with legacy DC bus drives; 24 VDC variants require a dedicated brake rectifier module (e.g., INTORQ BEG or SEG series). The BFK458 series remains in active production as of 2026, with full spare parts availability for all size designations.
The following SKUs represent the core BFK458 product range, organized by size (torque class) and voltage variant. All units are spring-applied, electromagnetically released, single-disc dry brakes.

DriveKNMS maintains a dedicated inventory program for the BFK458 series, covering both current-production and discontinued voltage variants. The 103 VDC and 180 VDC sub-series are no longer manufactured as standard catalog items but remain in service across legacy installations worldwide. DriveKNMS sources these units through authorized surplus channels and provides full functional testing prior to shipment.
For OEMs and end-users requiring long-term maintenance contracts, DriveKNMS offers multi-unit blanket orders with guaranteed lead times. Friction disc and armature plate sub-assemblies are stocked independently, enabling field-level repair without full brake replacement. Coil assemblies for all BFK458 size designations are available as separate line items.
All sourced units are supplied with traceable documentation including manufacturer date codes where available. Export compliance (HS code 8505.20) and country-of-origin certification (Germany) are provided as standard with each shipment.
Each BFK458 unit processed by DriveKNMS undergoes a structured inspection and functional test protocol before dispatch:
Visual Inspection: Friction lining thickness measurement against OEM wear limits. Armature plate flatness check. Coil housing integrity and terminal condition assessment.
Electrical Test: Coil resistance measurement (±5% of nominal). Insulation resistance test at 500 VDC (minimum 1 MΩ). Inrush and holding current verification at rated voltage.
Mechanical Function Test: Engagement and release cycle test (minimum 10 cycles). Air gap measurement and adjustment to OEM specification. Manual release lever operation check where fitted.
Torque Verification: Static holding torque test using calibrated brake dynamometer. Results logged against BFK458 size-specific torque table.
Documentation: Test report issued per unit. Batch traceability maintained for 5 years.
